I just did the timing chain and she runs fine, trying to set the timing properly and it is way off. With the vacuum disconnected and the timing light hooked up to the number one cyclinder, it flashes at about 40 degrees btdc, and I can get it to about maybe 20 degrees btdc by turning the distibuter, obviously something is not right, but it runs well. Am I doing something wrong?

vaccume lines disconnected and PLUGGED. Just cover them with a piece of tape. She maybe running good, but running good at 40deg. off is not good. jf it was running good before at 0, it should run good now at 0 unless you got it off a tooth or something.

I'd double check which tooth it's at. Put your motor in compression for #1 and make sure the rotor in your dist points at where the number one wire goes

Sounds like your distributor isn't installed properly. Try this, it's worth a shot.


Here's a trick I learned from 4Crawler:

Set your #1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke, pull your distributor out. Make sure that your distributor rotor is in the 12 o'clock position and reinstall it. Then go from there.

Yes thats right for TDC compression stroke. Read over these how to's to see if you might have missed something.

Also, in TDC at comp. stroke, The alignment key on the camshaft should be at 12 oclock. don't worry about the bright links on the chain at this point, they will never realign again. If the alignment keyway is not at 12 then you are off. Only way to fix that is do it all over again.

You start placeing it in with it at 12. As you completely install it the gears will then turn it to the left at appr. 11 oclock, where it should then be pointing toward the #1 cylinder.

Its possible that the balancer has twisted out of time.

You mostlikely marked the wrong notch on the crank shaft. check again its not possible to be that much advanced. check agian. Either way an engine runs more efficeintly the more advanced the timing. It won't hurt to advance timing. Sometimes if your cooling system sucks too much advance can cause overheating. But it won't hurt. either way check crank.

I did not plug the hoses, hoping that is the issue, all things mentioned about instalation of the distributor are correct in accordance with the way I installed everything. I thought it was supposed to be at 5 degrees BTDC, is it supposed to be 0? I have the early model 22r carbeurated.

Oh yeah also guys, she shoots about a foot long flame out of my exhaust at idle, mind you my exhaust is broken off immediately after the cat, and well the cat's job is to get the gases hot enough to burn the rest of the fuel in the mix, so I guess it's doing its job. However it seems to have too much fuel in the exhaust and my gas mileage sucks, like 12 mpg. I'll re check the timing tonight and try to post back tomorrow.

tried to retime her while plugging the vacuum hoses and no change, timing still just as far off, has a loping idle like a tractor, and shoots a good sized flame out the exhaust at idle. Not sure what is going on, honestly, it runs good, terrible fuel mileage though, obviously running super rich.
