Timing chain Cover too tall?!?!

i can't seem to find a timing chain coveR that fits my rig. They are all too tall. Has anyone else run into this problem? I have a 84 dolphin carbd. I'm leaving on a 6 month trip in 10 days and I gotta find a replacement that fits to get it back together. So confused.

I believe there is a difference between the block deck height between early and late 22r engine blocks that requires two different timing covers. Seems I recall '84 and earlier are different than '85 and up. Then, to add confusion, some early ones have double row timing gear.

Even if you have the correct cover in hand, it may still be too tall because the block height has been shortened by milling.

Usually, when a block is milled, the timing cover that is to be used is bolted up to the block so that they both can be cut flush with each other.

If you are sure that your cover is the correct one, you may have to make some measurements and have your cover milled down.

How tall is the cover? Has the motor ever been decked before? If so, you have to have s machine shop shave it to fit.

Below is what I learned on the timing covers.

Copied....
Old and New Style Block Differences.
I got my Timing Chain on and had to replace the Timing Cover due to it being worn. I tried to use a early model 22r and they wont interchange. Thought I would put some info up to help others identify what they may have.

84 and older. 22r has no dimples/circles and the number "2" on it. Twistedyota got it right on the height thing, see the last picture for a good example. I also tried to mark which bolt holes for removing the timing cover on down the road when I have to do a chain again. Hope it wont burn off but it if does I tried to come up with an easier way. Never can remember which bolts they are.

22re has "6k" and dimples/circles. 85 and up.

Here is what I am talking about on the 1/8th inch height. I used a lockwasher to help show how much of a difference. This cover is 22r. Seems like the oil pump bolts were to short. Hope this will save some one some trouble. It is an early model 22r timing cover on a newer 22re block.
