tight valves

Hey everyone. Just back to the toyota community after a long time away. This time with a 1984 4wd pickup with a 22r.

The odometer reads 170k and the previous owner has been in the engine before, orange gasket maker all over the valve cover, head gasket, and water hoses. I've had it for a few weeks and am going through the truck checking things. I checked the valves the other day and they were insanely tight. I couldn't even get a .005 gauge in there. Got them spaced to .008 and .012 and the engine is super loud now which seems normal.

My question is, is there anything I should be looking out for with the valves being so tight? I'm not sure how long they were set like that but at least a few hundred miles. What damage could occur from this? I always see guys saying don't do it but with no specific explanation why.

It runs much better now. Had a weird miss that seems to be gone. Thanks.

I have seen the lifters cut into the cam lobes if to tight. You will see a lip on the cam lobe if it ate into the cam. If that is not showing, you may have lucked out without any problems.

It is good that adjusting the valves in a 22r Is easy to do but, .005" is not the smallest feeler in the pack, a .0012 is the smallest usually and if that can't get through then you definitely have a too tight valve that can cause compression loss.
.005" is a tighter lash than is called for but, the valve is still closing all the way.
Did you check to see what the lash was or did you just adjust proper and move on?

I thought the .005 was the smallest I had but maybe I missed the smaller feelers. The .005 wouldn't go so I just adjusted from there. Don't know where it was set unfortunately.

What would cause the loss of compression? Burning the edge of a valve from being partially open? A buddy told me to wait a week or two in order to let the valve "seat" again and then check compression. Sound reasonable? Is there anything else to check?

8 screw & lock nut adjustments is about all you can do under the cam cover then put the cover back on nice & tight. I need to check the valves in my truck now that you made me think about it, she has about 1500 miles on the new engine that runs stronger than I thought possible judging by the old engine.
