thermostat problems 1985 toyota 4x4 22re pick up sr5
hello
twice now 1 month apart .. when i just start to drive .the temp gage goes up and i stop and open hood and push on the upper radiator hose and it is pressurized .... then it seams the thermostat opens , and can fully push on the upper radiator hose, start truck and temp normal , so means?? bad thermostat, sensor? can i just take out thermostat, all together ????
also when i stop after driving radiator fluid pisses out the over flow ??? why do i need a new radiator? blockage?????? can i put a newer 4x4 brass 3 row radiator on it

Is the 22RE the petrol engine?
You just gotta go through all the components, not many. Pretty well your thermostat, fan clutch, rad cap, water pump and radiator is all there is to it.
If your gauge goes up just after cold starting you've most likely got a faulty gauge or sensor. As for pressure in your hose straight away.... It's a bit funky, first thing I'd do is just check your cap and thermostat, little things before jumping to conclusions. Instant pressure can only really be caused by one thing.
As for coolant coming out after a drive, anything that causes you to overheat will do that. (if your gauges faulty you may not even know it's overheating). First thing I'd check there is your rad cap, then your fan clutch, could be rooted or just need a top up.

My 86 yota truck did the same thing ?
As dose my 85 4runner?
Same situation as you.
I get it start to drive. Get on the interstate, go a few miles and my gage is reading about 3/4 . I give my old girl a few reves out of gear and she drops the temp right down???
Any help on this would be great ??

New water pump ,hoses and radiator.
No coolant loss, or oil loss

TSB: 029032787 22R-E Engine Temperature Overshoot
Some 1984 pickup trucks and 1983-1984 Celica models, equipped with 22R-E engines, may experience a condition called "temperature gauge overshoot". After starting a cold engine the temperature gauge will indicate a higher than normal engine temperature for a short time just prior to the thermostat opening. After the thermostat opens, the temperature gauge will return to the normal range. A new double valve thermostat has been made available to reduce temperature gauge overshoot.
And calls for part number 90916-03070 which according to the TSB replaces 90916-03055.
