Steering Box Rebuild

Has anyone rebuilt the power steering gearbox from their 84 or 85 4Runner or pickup? Mine has started leaking out of the input shaft seal and so far I have removed it from the truck and removed the 4 bolts that hold the worm gear shaft in. Does anyone have experience rebuilding these or have a FSM or diagram that shows how the rest of the box comes apart? I can get a new seal kit from toyota for about $120, or worst case scenario a rebuilt steering box for about $350.

here is a post on modifying the box for hydro assist. it has a lot of good info in it and should help you to at least take apart the box and get things back together.

Sorry if i didnt specify earlier, this is for an 84-85 model, meaning solid front axle with the push-pull steering box, not the 86-up IFS box. Thanks for the replies though.

nice link seaflea.

no mention of fluid to use. [w/o power steering] i heard that using a (thicker) synthetic gear oil w/molybdenum? or MOLY_G is also good for the box parts.

I was able to locate a complete PDF of an 85 4Runner FSM. Thanks for the help! I know the 84-85 steering setup isnt very common and theres not a whole lot of info out there about it. A seal kit and it should be ready to roll by the end of the week!

there's a 95 4 runner that I can get the steering system and brake system (master cylinder and booster) from it.
That will work, anything 4WD from '86-'95.

IIRC, 2wd steering boxes(nonpower steering) use gear oil....the IFS boxes and SA push pulls(power steering equiped) use ATF.

Just replace the seal on the screw-on disk for the input shaft. I had to do it to mine...

I'm getting ready to lift my 85 Toyo Extra Cab, and was told that when I convert it to high steer, I'll need to put a steering box from and IFS on it. I'm guessing that when I find a used one, it'll likely need rebuilding if possible.

Any suggestions on how to proceed??

Buying a rebuilt one is probably a good way to go. DIY rebuild write-up below:
