sr5 coolant gauge issue

did a search around and others that had similiar problems but no solutions. the temp gauge pegs out like 30 seconds after starting from dead cold but the truck isn't overheating. looks like some sort of common problem with sr5's?

hmm, is there a easy way to check this? go from the sending unit(at the thermostat) to the gauge? kinda new to electrical troubleshooting but understand the basics

Search, theres a thread. You need to get a differnt type of thermostat that has a little hole in it to allow coolant thru all the time or something along hte lines of that.

Yep:

Quote:
TSB: 029032787 22R-E Engine Temperature Overshoot

It says:

Some 1984 pickup trucks and 1983-1984 Celica models, equipped with 22R-E engines, may experience a condition called "temperature gauge overshoot". After starting a cold engine the temperature gauge will indicate a higher than normal engine temperature for a short time just prior to the thermostat opening. After the thermostat opens, the temperature gauge will return to the normal range. A new double valve thermostat has been made available to reduce temperature gauge overshoot.

And calls for part number 90916-03070 which according to the TSB replaces 90916-03055.
Happened on my '85/SR-5 and the t-stat listed fixed it 100%.

its not a problem of overshooting. it goes from dead cold to hot and doesn't fluctuate at all after that.

OK, then grab the Factory Service Manual, it has a page or two of testing the gauge and the sender.
