Pickup wont pass smog
i have a 1985 22r federal model. ive taken this truck to the smog station a few times and fail due to egr non funtional. all my exhaust tests are fine. so i was thinking if there is a different type of egr valve on the federal models. i know there is a negative back-pressure(which you have to plug the exhaust and then do the vac test.) ond the positive-pressure (where you just apply the vac.) Does anyone have experience with this same model. Thanks in advance for any help

Have you tryed removing the egr valve and clean it out ?, they can plug up with carbon and not work, also check all of the vacuum lines going to the egr and make sure there good. some trucks also have a vacuum modulator (i think thats what its called) that controls the vacuum going to the egr, if it goes bad the egr can either not get enough vacuum to operate or can get to much vacuum, depending on how it went bad.

On my 85 22re the EGR is attached to hoses/piping which lead to the thermo switchvalve. My piping was corroded and blocked so I replaced with hoses. You have to make sure the EGR valve, EGR Modulator, and thermovalve are plumbed correctly. Ask the mechanic if the EGR failed because there was no vacuum at the EGR Valve or if the EGR valve is stuck open.

i put a new egr valve on there after my first smog test. and all the hoses are routed correctly. but i havent tested the thermo valve yet. ill do that today. but what i am still wondering is if the federal model is a negative back-pressure egr valve.

Pages EC 30-33 of the FSM (available here http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1985/1985FSM.pdf )gives the testing procedure for the EGR, and the vacuum routing so you can answer your question. It is fairly common for the plumbing to become totally packed with carbon. Might be worth your time to remove the piping and clean it.

Does anyone else have egr vacuum metal piping clogged with gunk/rust? The four little metal piping welded together. Is the problem that the vauum isn't getting to the EGR valve?

Blow air through them to see if they are clogged. If so replace with rubber hose.

I thought that 1985 was old enough to not have to pass test
