noise in 4x4
At about half to full turn in 4x4 I have a hard clicking noise in or near my front hubs/knuckle area. Brakes actually locked up in front shortly after. Not sure if the brakes are an unrelated issue or not. Pressed brakes a new times and they let go. I know I'm in desperate need of a knuckle/axle rebuild, but what is causing this hard clicking? Almost binding sound?

Alright...no responses yet lol....but I'm pretty sure its the CV axles...now leads me to my next question...would CVs cause it to only click in 4x4? And will it hurt the t case or any other components to run a bad CV for a while? Tapped out at the moment.

It is a spring day on a weekend..give it some time, YT folks are pretty good about chiming in
To start trouble shooting I would put the truck up on all fours (jackstands) and start turning the front wheels with both hubs locked than unlocked. Give them a few turns both ways..Might be a busted hub ring, bearings or maybe a blown birf..
If it is an 84 you have birfields (technically a CV) but not in the tradition toyota way..As in IFS CV..

Alright I'm about to order marlin axle rebuild kit...and I'm wondering if I should get 2 of there birfields too....called (marfields). I'm pretty sure I have a bad birf. Only get a clicking when locked in 4x4 and turning. Nothing at all in 2 wheel. Any recommendations?

Longfields are good too. Not the Trail-Gear Longfields, but actual Longfields, if someone can post who carries them. I'm not sure if RCV carries a joint for the solid-axle. But if they do, they're strong too. I'm not certain on the actual Marfields compared to Longfields. Do a Google comparison search.

27 is stock. you can also buy chromo 27 splines, and 30 splines are the best. I think stock has a break strength of 4600lbs, chromo 27s are mid 7000 and the 30s are upper 8. You can get actual numbers from the web, thats just of the top of my head.
What you need depends on how hard on your truck you are.
All solid axle shafts (stock, and 30s) are both 30 spline at the diff and the hubs, when they say 27 or 30, they are talking about splines where the axle shaft goes into the birfield.

Nvm I got it...have to be 27s unless I change out inner axle. Duhh. I'm not gonna be crawling at all...some mud and logging roads here and there. To my understanding...trail gear bought bobby longs rights to the longfield super axles. So I'm gonna go with them I suppose (27 chromo).

To use your stock inner axle, you will need 27 spline. When you buy a "30 spline kit" it comes with new inner axles and birfs that are BOTH 30 spline where the inner axle goes into the birf.
Heres some good ole fashoned tech: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyot...e-results.html
So you can see putting 27 splines on a stock axle will move the weak point to the inner axle shaft.
Longfield 4340 30 spline (shaft failure)......................8,500............... ......175
Longfield 4340 27 spline........................................6,50 0.....................75
Stock Toyota Birfield.......................................... ..4,200 .....................45
Stock Toyota Inner Axle.......................................5,000 .....................45
Longfield 4340 27 spline........................................6,50 0.....................75
Stock Toyota Birfield.......................................... ..4,200 .....................45
Stock Toyota Inner Axle.......................................5,000 .....................45

Happy to help!
RCV made the old longs... and used to make the dirty 30s.
You can get rcv shafts (aka the real longs) from Davez off road. Can still get the IFS conversion hub gears too.

Still the best?
So after reading through this thread and a few others, is the set of original longfields from davez the best you can get? Reading through the report from 2006-2008 they look pretty high up there in terms of taking abuse. Looking to replace on an 84 ext.

some people can bend a crowbar in a sandbox... it kinda depends on what you are doing.
can't go wrong with longs(aka rcv) from davez, most people think that they are the best.
the dirty30s, or whatever tg is doing, is probably plenty strong, and has traditionally been cheaper than longs.
i would not run the marfields, unless your truck is light, with a 22re, and you aren't going to be hammering it with the heavy pedal.
whatever you do, remember that you'll probably have to get matching hub gears, or it'll void the warranty, if that's where the breakage is.
