Newbie "ram-air" intake/cold air--Home made

My truck has been lacking power since I've put the 31's on and I've been wanting to modify my truck without spending too much money since funds are tight right now (college this fall). I thought I'd give a shot at some kind of cold air intake system. Its pretty hillbillyish but it actually works amazing. Before I put it on, my max speed was about 75 in 4th gear, then if I put it in 5th I would almost have to floor it to keep that pace. Also 5th gear had barely any use except for cruising between 55 and 70. Today, I drove with it on and I could actually accellerate reasonbly well in 5th gear and cruising at 75 is back to the same as with the 235/75's. And 4th gear is just much better.

the things I used: A length of old vaccuum cleaner hose and a Leatherman with a knife and saw to cut a hole in the piece of plastic that directs the air into the intake tube. There was a hole in the side wall near the air box for some wires to go between that wall and the panel. The hose was able to snake through there without being crimped or sinched. As seen in the pictures, the hose's opening is where the corner marker light was. The other end goes into the airbox tube about an inch. It doesnt fill up the intake tube so not ALL the air is coming from the hose. My one question though: If too much air gets rammed into the intake/engine, will it actually damage anything? Piston rings, valves, seals, etc.? I mean, its not a lot but it is open into the frontal stream of air, but the hose isnt very large, maybe an inch and a half diameter.

I highly doubt that hose did anything at all. The stock air box already has a big opening right behind the headlight. If anything, it may have helped airflow becuase you cut another hole in the air box, but im betting if you removed the hose it wouldn't make it worse.

btw once you put your marker lense back on, any "cold air" is diverted away from that opening, making the whole thing moot.

One more thing....its not a true ram air system. The curves you have in that hose would prevent it #1. Even if it was, it wouldn't do any damage since its not forcing any air in. The engine can only gulp as much air as the valves will allow. Think of the engine like a big air pump. Without forced induction, the air intake volume will only be so much, no matter how "open" it is.

The ram air was a joke. And im not going to put the marker back on.

Well, its pretty illegal to run around without the marker.

But being in alaska, you may be able to get away with it.

Either way, not really worth the time and effort imho.

No spirit killing, just being realistic. If you think it works, keep it on there. Dont let me talk you out of it, I'm just giving you an insight into my knowledge.

You asked!

Your engine is toast now. I'm on my way to Alaska to get it...you better have it removed by the time I get there

You could just take off the bed and the cab...they are pretty much excess weight. Build yourself a low profile lightweight carbon fiber milk crate to sit on, then WHAMMO you'll have more power than you know what to do with.

Wait till you hit a puddle and "ram" water into your system! My buddy has a little 86 prelude and he made a PVC "ram air". I'm skeptical but hey he's happy with it. I'd rather make a snorkel than ram air anyway!
