How hard, changing tranny
Alright, I have a good freind who can help me,and the lifts and tools at the Airforce Base. Can we change out a 5 speed in a 85 4runner in 1 day?

Sure.... Depends on how fast you work etc.............
Its a PITA to get it to line back up but other than that it should be good...
This is with a MT/ no idea about the auto.
If it is time for a new clutch now would be the time...

Thanks, I will be putting a new cluch in while we are at it. I love the Military base hobby shops, to bad my IRR time runs out at the end of April, I will miss the lifts and such.

Well I finnaly got around to doing my tranny. Problem is now that it is all back together there is a loud ratteling/slapping sound (sounds like a baseball card in a bike tire) coming from the bellhouseing. It makes this sound when it is in gear or in nutrual. However if I hold the clutch down the noise will go away. Also my truck now sounds llike it is lugging, not all of the time but most of it. It ran fine before the tranny swap. One more thing, when I was driving it home while in 5th gear on the highway it popped out of gear several times, if I held it in 5th it was fine. I am thinking that it is the throwout bearing, worn out or not re-installed properly. What do you think?

You didn't put a new throwout bearing in? Probably not a new pilot bearing then either, eh?
Hmm....baseball card in the spokes sound...but only with the clutch pedal out...let me think.
Could be improper throwout bearing installation.
Do you know the history of this new tranny?

Which truck did the shift fork/throwout bearing come from? It may matter...but I'm not sure. I think you need the one that goes with the transmission, not the engine (as in you need the 95 tranny shift fork, not the shift fork that would go with your 85 engine, since the fork is more part of the tranny than engine), but I'm not sure if they changed between those years or not.
No idea if this is getting you closer to the problem, but it's something to look into.

I took the throwout bearing off of the tranny that came off my 4runner. The replacement tranny did not have a fork or bearing on it, butttt they looked 100% identical. I already called NAPA and they are getting me a new throwout bearing and I really hope that is what it is.
I have been waiting to get my 4runner on the road again for 3 years now and I am beyond frustrated, everything else works great on the rig and I sure can not afoard to buy or rebuild a transmission right now. I also can not put the old one back in as we got curious and decided to open her up and see why reverse did not work, turns out they need teeth to engage.

So I just went out to drive around the block and I noticed a few more things. Half way through the drive I could not shift into 1rst gear, now I was going 20MPH still (i was not going to let off the clutch) so mabey there is a speed saftey I never noticed before. Also while sitting in the driveway I put the T-case in nutrol and I did not need the clutch to shift 1-5 and reverse, is that normal? It has just been a while since I was out playing in this thing and forgott how it all works.

the noise while in gear, i get the same noise in 4th and 5th. if i push the clutch in it goes away. I believe my pilot and throw out are shot. the guy who had it before me sunk the truck half way up the doors. motor sucked up water through the dip stick. ill be back home in 2 weeks and will be droping the tranny to do the clutch. please keep usup on ur findings.
on the other hand i have no problems with it jumping out of gear. only problem i do have is that i have to use all the pedal to shift gears

In my truck it doesn't like to go into first even at like 10mph.
I would definitely do the pilot and throwout bearings. Not sure it'll solve your issue, but you should always do them with the clutch. Make sure you grease the surfaces as it shows in the FSM, also. Same with the shift fork. How is you slave cylinder adjusted? I'm kind of picturing something rubbing against the clutch cover teeth as it spins. You don't have the throwout bearing on the wrong side of the shift fork, do you? I know you aren't stupid, but weird mistakes happen.

It would not suprise me if we screwed up the instalation of the throwout bearing, the old one kind of fell of so we tried to find the most logical way to put it back on. I am 99% sure we put the throwout bearing in front of the shift fork, closest to the fly wheel. The clips that held it together were pretty shot and I am afraid one of them could of come off when we put it all back together. The slave cly is new but I will deffinitly check that out also. I am hopeful that this will fix everything but I have a bad feeling that part of the problem could be the tranny itself. Does anyone have a pic of the throwout bearing installed? My haynes does not have one.

Yeah the more I think about it, I don't think you'd be able to shift at all if the bearing was on the wrong side. Those clips suck, don't they? You shouldn't reuse those, either. Toyota supposedly makes a better one which is one solid wire that goes all the way from one side to the other and is much more rigid, rather than those two flimsy clips.
I guess a clip could have jammed somewhere, and it's clicking against the clutch. You'll see when you pull it out!
