high steer

Well took off my worn out 4 inch lift on my 85 runner and installed allpro 4 inch springs and wide lift shackles on the front....It looks more like a 6 inch lift now compared to the rear but anyways my question is do I have to go with high steer cause my drag link now is really close to the u bolt now I still can turn but the cotter pin is rubbing the u bolt at times just barely, is this safe? I am going to do the highsteer and mybe hydro ass. but don't have an extra grand for that right now and want to go and play but at the same time I want to be safe....Any thoughts?

High steer IMO is a must on 3" of lift or higher.

You can easily add hydro assist later on.

Ya that's what I thought....Runners been torn apart for a week and I just want to drive her but I better save my pennys for high steer, sky sells the kit with a used 86+ power steering box for 500.00. I drove the truck around the block and seemed to drive alright, is the high steer mainly for hard flexin and what not offroad? or is it a must for every type of driving?

You should really get crossover (Hysteer) steering because, I'll bet you removed your torque arm. Without the torque arm in place, you'll get enough wheel travel (on the driver's side) to break the J arm. If you can't afford crossover steering right away and you want to wheel in the meantime, at least keep the torque arm hooked up for the time being......Just some friendly advice----------Hans

Ya, Oatmeal the torque arm is not there I bought it that way, can I fab one up cause I don't think a stock one would be long enough anyways...I just wanna drive her on the streets all get crossover before I head to moab this fall. Also it looks like all need longer brake lines and shocks...looks like the little toy is going to be a money pit after all.

Well, you won't break it on the street but, you'll probably get some bump steer. Lots of guys will remove the torque rod to get a little more wheel travel offroad and end up breaking the J arm where the drag link attaches.......I used to carry a spare (that was broken before and gusseted) because even with the torque rod attached you run the risk of breaking it if you wheel it hard enough. It's amazing how much nicer it steers with crossover......money well spent!----------Hans
