I believe the relay you're looking for is the Circuit Opening Relay which is located above the ECU, behind the passenger kick panel. Pull the speaker cover and remove the speaker and you should see it to the right.

For some reason this relay isn't shown in the FSM relay location diagrams...

So if its going out would you think it would cause the truck to sparitcally lose power and otherwise run fine?

Not too sure to be honest. I'm having a fuel issue (I think) too where after about 15mins of driving the truck will start to buck, hesitate and sputter pretty bad. I have checked quite a few things and still haven't fixed my issue.

One thing I did do to try and fix my issue was take apart that relay I mentioned and clean the contacts inside. You can try that and see if it helps. I cleaned the contacts in the relay, cleaned all 4 engine bay grounds, changed plugs, cap/rotor and the truck ran fine for a little over a week but now the problem just returned today after I filled up with gas after work.

If you mean the circuit opening relay, it is behind the glove compartment, to the right of the blower. Here are pictures of it barely visible with glove compartment door removed. This is the relay that you hear click when you put ignition key in "Start" position.





I have started posting pics of locations of components here. I hope this would help my fellow owners of First-Gen 4Runners.

You can give the fuel pump test jumper a try:

Sometimes you can't hear the COR click since the starter is making a lot of noise at the same time.


And see if there are any stored trouble codes from the engine stopping:

My truck's been down for the last couple months to do a RUF install and to build out the front axle. This afternoon I decided to start up the engine and see how she's doing. It would start and run for about 3 seconds and die; would not accept any gas. So I tried starting it and leaving the starter engaged after it starts and giving it gas; it ran, but didn't like it. So I tried putting in the test jumper for the fuel pump. At this point, it started and ran, but only at idle. When I tried to give it gas, it would bog down, and even backfire thru the exhaust manifold (acting like the timing had changed or something).

When I unplug the jumper, it dies immediately. So i'm guessing I need to check the relay in the AFM assembly. It sounds like I could run it with the jumper in place, as long as I don't leave it in the ON position while the engine's not running. I'm out of ideas on how to troubleshoot this. Anyone have experience with this???

Test jumper will only run the fuel pump with the ignition is on. Check the Circuit Opening relay to see if it is getting energized by the AFM. Likely you have an air/vacuum leak in the intake plumbing:

That will cause it to bog down/backfire/die when you hit the gas since you have unmetered air getting to the engine.

Thanks for the reply. It jogged my mind, and I had forgotten to connect the wiring onto the top of the air intake assembly!!! Fired right up. Time to adjust the new high steer, get the wheels on, and take her for a ride!!!

So I just dove back into the site and saw this old post and thought I would share how I fixed the truck..........turns out after all that the hunting for the relay it wasn't that. the damn pump was bad and I was a lil niave thinking that if it had pressure enough to spray everywhere when the line was removed that it was enough to run the truck. new fuel pump and the truck ran fine......till I blew that motor up.............
