My truck doesnt idle when its cold. Im sure it has to do with the massive vacuum leaks I have surrounding my carburator. But while poking around under the hood I found some wiring that looks like it has been ripped from its destination, and I'd like to know where it goes.

The wires I found route up near the carburator, there are 4 wires in the loom. 2 of the wires goto temperature switches mounted in the intake manifold. The other 2 wires were disconnected. One of the disconnected wires had a female connector on it, and it was long enough to reach my coolant temp sensor. I plugged it into the temp sensor, but there is a 4th wire that has no connector. The insulation is torn and wire is exposed so I think it may have been ripped from where it goes. No idea tho, i cant find anywhere to put it.

Also, before my temp guage did not work. Now it does, i assume since I connected that one wire to the temp sensor. However, the gauge remains at 1/2 even if i start the truck up after sitting over night... it doesnt rise gradually so im starting to wonder if maybe the sensor is bad, or that wire doesnt actually go there. I do know after I connected that wire to the temp sensor my truck idled at 2500rpm instead of 1500, so i adjusted the idle down... however, if I drop the idle any lower than 1200 the truck likes to stall out.

If it helps at all, i can get pictures... but I will have to wait until daylight.

I hate to butt in but I just bought an 84 4runner and all the wiring doesnt seem to be there. Does anyone know where I can buy new factory spec wiring harnesses??? My motor just craped out on me tonight and I am going to replace it with another 22r but I am certain I am missing wires too. Does anyone have the slightest Idea where I can get a diagram and some pictures
and or a some new engine wiring harnesses?

ill look at my wiring tommarow and see whats up. A pic would help describe your problem better though. The temp sensor for the gauge shouldnt affect anything with the engine because there are 2 other temp sensors that are for the engine. definantly get the sending unit replaced so you have an accurate water temp reading.

Here you can see the yellow and the red wire. The yellow one I have attatched to a temp sensor comming out the side of my block. The red one, i dunno where it goes. the FSM i downloaded doesnt show anything, and the wiring schematic iisn't the easiest in the world to read.

Fix the vaccum leaks because those will cause idle problems. There should be a harness going to the carburetor with 4 wires on it. Two go to the fuel cut solenoid. If those are not hooked up or if they are backwards then it will cause idle problems. I read your other thread about your truck having an '86 cab and an '84 frame. There is a chance that other parts have been installed from various years and you might have to change some parts so everything works correctly. 22Rs changed in '85, so some parts might be slightly different from '85 up. California and federal smog trucks also have slightly different parts that may cause problems if mixed. California smog has two temp sensors going to the computer and federal smog only has one. If you have wiring for a California smog with a federal smog engine, then you would be left with an extra wire.

Where do I find these temp sensors? I can only locate one. I heard there are 2, but not sure where the other one might be. Im sure the motor is from a '84, and just the cab is a '86.

I got a new carburator I am going to install. I found the choke on my current carb is bad and wont open or shut propperly.

I checked the 4 wires leading to the carb, the harness looks good. The fuel cut works propperly. Im just wondering what this red wire goes to.

Also, my temp guage seems to stay at the Normal postition no matter what. If i wake up in the morning and put the key in the start position, the gauge rises even tho the truck sat overnight... so i know the motor cant be at operational temp. The other day, the gauge worked, and was in the red. It would go down anytime I came to a stop, so Im sure it was doing something... Then later I filled the radator back to full and the gauge started to act wierd again.

This weekend Im going to tear into it and fix most of the wiring mess. Alot of the wires under the hood are frayed and you can see where the previous owner just twisted them back together. 1st i plan on repairing alot of bad grounds I am locating, but there are a couple unidentified wires Im not sure where they should go.

Any help would be greatly apreciated.

oh and P.S. My oil pressure gauge doesnt move. Its resting below 0, however I verified there is a wire connected to the pressure sending unit. Any idea how I can test this thing?

Only California smog vehicles will have two sensors. They are about an inch apart on the intake manifold. The computer is in the cab, so the harness and computer may have been used from the '86, leaving you with different wires than the engine requires. If the '86 had a 22RE, then that would make things even more complicated.

You can test the oil pressure and temp senders using an ohm meter. With the engine off and the oil pressure sender wire disconnected, put a probe on the connector on the sender and put the other probe to ground. See what it reads (it will probably be nothing). Start the engine and do it again. It should read something. If it does not, then you need a new sending unit. If it works, then you probably have a short or a bad connection.

The temp sender will have different resistance at different temperatures. You might have the wrong temp sender for the gauge cluster. 22Rs and 22REs use different sending units, but I am not sure if the signal is different. It sounds like you either have an incorrect temp sender or a bad one.

I think you have a lot of extra wires, so it will be better to focus on what does not work and go from there rather than trying to figure out what all of the unused wires go to. Although fixing the bad connections and grounds is a good idea.
