Clutch went out, so I got a replacement, except a bolt from the flywheel wheel was bent and not reusable. Decided to pull the engine and clean it up while I wait for toyota to get my part. Is there something I should take a look at/fix/replace while the engine is out and easy to access?

probably to late but If the motor was pulled i would do a full top end. head gasket, timing chain, guides, check water pump and timing cover. check valves and clean out the egr valves. Hey that is just me though. if the motor is already out all of that is very easy to get too. Like I said though I may be to late of a reply.

Agree with above. A good time to swap in new alt bracket if you wanted to run a higher amp GM alt.

I heard you can run a newer Camry alt which puts out very close to the GM one but fits the same mounts. Is that real?

yeah it seems i cannot now either so maybe I was wrong. I did however run across the one wire alt made by lc engineering seems pretty cool. kinda pricey and not as easy to find as a gm one though. http://www.lceperformance.com/High-O...-p/1080005.htm

If you're going to upgrade the alt. Look into the Jaguar alternator upgrade. Its almost a direct replacement.

Definately research one wire set up. The easy of installation is quickly outweighed by the performance. There is a reason no car manufactures use the set up these days. Honestly the converting to a GM alternator plug was a baby step more difficult than the one wire set up. Hell it was more difficult searching the C130 single pulley applications than the install. There is a detailed how to post with wiring diagram and alternator applications that was just posted within last two weeks.

I just replaced the brushes on my OE alternator for $5. Works great for me. I don't have a winch though, either. A 5 hp winch will pull about 300 amps at 12VDC under full load. Depending on your auxiliary battery and how much you use the winch, you may or may not need a bigger alternator.

If I were you I'd focus on the low hanging fruit. The motor is out, and you have full unencumbered access to the front of the motor. I'd swap out the timing chain and add steel tensioners if the chain had more than 100k miles on it. New oil pump would be in order as well.

Timing chain failures kill about 85% of these motors. Otherwise they go 300k plus until the rings blow out.

im building up more of an expedition truck with a lot of extras. I will be taxing the battery setup either way. I will need the stronger alt I am pretty sure. Hey I have a few friends who are near seattle. Good wheeling? my good friend lives in everett and my brother in law has a bunch of friends and family up there. I am going up there when my truck is done where would be best to look into?
