A while back, I researched mufflers quite a bit. It seemed that people found the Dynomax Super Turbo to be a deep sounding, but not too loud muffler when used on the 22R engine. I bought one but have not installed it yet. It looks to be very free-flowing.
I am going with a 2" pipe, but I have read that 2.25" will get the most power without losing low end torque. 2.5" is too big and you will lose any low end. Stock size is 1.75", so a 2" pipe is an upgrade.

I will install mine as soon as I get access to a welder. I will also report my results back here.

gentlemen: i just got back from Napa Auto, loading down on air/oil/water filters for my fleet. I get my filters there because they are made by Wix, and they are cheap. Well, this time I saw an advertisement on the counter for mufflers. Since Napa has a reputation of branding other high quality manufacturers parts (filters are Wix, oil is Valvoline), I inquired who made the mufflers. They indicated that Dynomax makes their mufflers.
Dynomax is also a daughter company of Walker. Under both names, they are high quality and fairly pricey mufflers. The OE-replacement (Napa-branded "Dynomax") for the 22RE was only $44. A considerable savings over the Dynomax from Summit Racing (link in first post)...

man, i have an 88 4runner 22re with lc headers, dynomax high flow cat, and a flowmaster 60 series muffler. I really don't like the sound of the muffler and am contemplating removing the 60 series and going with something else, possible a dynomax. i really want a good flowing exhaust but doesn't sound too loud. the 60 series isn't too loud but it just doesn't sound like i wanted, it is hard to explain. i don't know if it is the fact that i have an automatic and am not use to the way an automatic sounds with an exhaust or what. i am used to a 5 speed with an exhaust if that makes sense. I am very interested in hearing more about the NAPA mufflers. I have a father in law that works at one and I can get stuff pretty good from him. please let me know how it sounds.

I had a dynomax on my '84 22r and my 93 4runner 3.0 (and on a few chev 4.3's) and found they were great. they're supposed to flow very well relative to other performance mufflers and seem to be cheaper. it sounded great on the 22r, as deep as you can get for a 4cyl without sounding like a ricer. they don't hold up particularly well in salty conditions though. they consistently lasted about 3 years in eastern canada before they rusted out a seam.

i have the dynomax cat back and like it it was for a 2wd so i modified the tailpipe, but noticed power and love the tone. I got it at advanced auto, and i think the piping is 2.25.

I can't remember what size piping was on my 22r but a catback "kit" should be listed in the Walker catalog for most of the yota's (that's the one I used). I think the "kit" uses the stock tailpipe though so i'm not sure why it's listed that way.

if you go to advancedauto.com and check out the walker mufflers, the walker mufflers have the same part number as the dynomax super turbo muffler on summit.

back with a quick review of the dynomax super turbo muffler. bought this one today http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku with a 20" case length, i measured the stock muffler on my 4runner at 19". the setup is now LCE header with 2" merge collector, to cat, to 2.25" pipe and muffler all the way back. after the 50$ muffler, i paid a local shop (Nevada Muffler) 155$ for the pipe and install. they kindly did a solid job.
i'm pretty happy with the setup, i got exactly what i was after. from ignition to idle, there is virtually no change in stock sound unless you are within about 10 - 15 feet, then you can detect a mini rumble (or a grumble?). on revs, the sound is more pronounced, but never loud. at cruising speed, there is again virtually no change from stock sound (in the drivers seat). I have my top off now, and so i have a pretty good impression of how it must sound from the sidewalk too. I didnt detect any interior resonance, but that might change when i get the top back on this fall. in terms of performance, the truck is more smoothly sailing up throught the rpms, and i used to have a slight hesitation at around 3100 which is now gone (along with the hole in my old exhaust, related i think). also, since all the joints were welded tight, i have now isolated my exhaust leak to the block or the first cat flange (second one is now gone and welded). overall i think the engine does now breathe better, but as with my tacoma, i think most of the gains were made with the header (i've never done it the other way around). so much for a quick post. the last item is this: i think you can get the same muffler at napa auto. the dynomax parent company, walker, supplies the napa branded mufflers, and a little more digging could turn up a decent savings on the same item. i started to chase that one down - i think i found their "super turbo" before which is probably the exact same item for around 42$, but i was in summit racing today and decided to just get the job done.
