Was that hole under or to the side of the oil filter?

Under the filter. I don't have a port to the left of it. There is one underneath the passenger engine mount though...

Did this swap in my '84 yesterday. All the gauges work nicely. I did run a wire from the test plug (green plug in engine bay) through the hood latch cable and connected to the "P" screw. With these instructions, it was pretty dang easy to make this slick upgrade.

My temp gauge reads right in the middle for the first couple of minutes, then drops down and starts working normally. Everything else works fine.

Taking out the odomoter to roll to manually turn the mileage to match it up (from 137k UP to 168) was easy. I tried at first to switch out the odometers, but the needles pulled off differently. One came off WITH the little gear, and one W/O. no big deal.

I did use an upholstery tool (little plastic dude with a fork at the end) to pull the needles and that worked well.

Now, with my SR5 cluster and inclinometer and altimeter mounted as well, my standard '84 is looking pretty fancy.

Overall, thanks again to the OP and all the additions that made this nice upgrade very easy.

CORRECTION: All is not well. My old Speedo went to 85. This one goes to 110. I didn't think that would make a difference, as I thought the gearing within the new cluster would accommodate and the cable would not move the needle at the same speed as it did the 85 MPH speedo. However, the needle seems to be moving at the same speed, so it looks like I'm going 38 when I'm really only going 30. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Hmm... I think I may be hosed, and I'll need to look for an SR5 instrument cluster from an '84 that has the 85 MPH max instead of 110.
I love the way it looks, and the tach is nice (although not 100% accurate it seems) and having a voltmeter and oil pressur gauge is sweet.

I'm going to leave it in and do some math on my speed limits
Actual 20 = 26 MPH on my speedo
35 = 45 MPH
45 = 58 MPH
55 = 71 MPH
65 = 84 MPH

Can't wait to check my mileage next tank!

In the meantime, does anybody have a SR5 cluster from an '84 that they'd like to get of?

I put a 110mph cluster from an 87 4cyl in my 84 and other than a messed up oil pressure gauge (faulty before I installed it) everything seems to be right. My speedo reads fast by about 5mph but I blame that's on my 529 gearing with 36's.

I haven't had this truck long and didn't check to see if the early sr5 cluster that I pulled out was reading accurate, the temp gauge was acting up so I did the swap to the newer cluster.

Now that I think about it my 84 has efi added and maybe the whole harness was replaced with it. I haven't seen what your experiencing to be a common problem with this swap, do you think you could have put the needle back on wrong after pulling it?

I guess I could have put the needle on wrong, but I don't think so. The needle starts at 0 MPH and moves consistently and at the same pace it did before.

Sending you a PM, a Swap may be in order.

The cluster swap will take place. Yotaworx is sending the '84 SR5 cluster to me to swap. I'll keep everyone posted as to whether that fixes my spedometer issue.

I'll be happy to get the same year cluster anyway, so it'll all work out. Don't think my rig could get too much past 85 anyway.

Alright. Thanks YotaWoRx and this thread, my SR5 cluster swap is complete. My tach is reading a little high, but's okay for now.
The differerence between the speedo that shows 110 MPH and 85 MPS WAS why my speedo was reading differently, which makes sense. The cable still spins the same rate, and the needle still moves the same distance, so matching up the writing behind the needle is necessary.

Notice that the 60 MPH on the 110 is right where the 45 is on the 85 speedo.

So there are some small differences between the '84 - '88 clusters.
  • 84 has an 85 MPH speedo with white grid graphics
  • 85 has a 110 MPH speedo with white grid graphics
  • 86-88 has a 110 MPH speedo with solid black backgound (I think this is right, can somebody confirm?)
Now, all I need is clock and a lighter... (It's never done )

Do you need to drain the oil before you change the oil pressure sending unit?

connectors and wires are labeled on the dash cluster where they plug in. here are the steps for putting an auto cluster in a dash wired for a manual:

move yellow/black wire from A3 to A2 (oil light/guage)
move purple wire from A5 to A4 (check engine light)
move black wire from A6 to A5 (tach lead)

move yellow/red wire from C5 to C6 (fuel gauge)
move brown wire from C4 to C5 (fuel gauge)

I am not 100% on the fuel gauge wiring because mine didn't work before the swap and still doesn't. the brown wire was brown/black on the auto cluster but i traced everything out on both clusters and they seem to go to the same places. everything else seems to work fine.
I can confirm this worked, to include the fuel gauge working as tested. My SR5 gauge cluster swap was from a 1988 SR5 4Runner V6 Automatic into a 1988 Base Pickup V6.

I know it's been years, but thanks Chuntr. Build thread in the works... with pictures that aren't from photo upload sites now more than a decade old, lol.

I know, I know, that's what I get to coming so damn late to this party.

You can adjust the tach to what ever you want via the adjusting screw on the inside of the gauge. I did this for a V6 cluster to work with a 22re.

What would you have to do differently if it was a 22r motor but was converted to EFI? Im mot very familiar with wires and clusters. Im more familiar with suspension work

Most 84-88 trucks and 4runners are prewired for the SR5 cluster, if not some additional wiring and relay is needed. Not sure exactly how as I've never needed to add any.

Help

so I'm trying to gain a stock tachometer in my dash of my 1986 dlx with a 20r. I found one from a 86 or 87 turbo 22ret. (questions are numbered below as to reference any answers).lots of photos and can take more if needed. help!!!

^1will it work?

I understand the oil sender for the gauge not the light. haven't burned up the gauge with the wrong sender yet. and I won't.
but I have been doing research.

^2 Is there is only a write up on dlx to sr5 not dlx to turbo?

I went to the junk yard and found a 4runner first gen and it had the sr5 gauge set, missing the speedo and tach. so I cut the wiring harness to the connecters for the gauge cluster (to use as an example and to have the extra pin connectors).
I have noticed a few things different about the connectors.
^3 I read some where else that the turbo gauges need a different fuel sender?

^4 is this just for the digital turbo gauge cluster?

^5 and I shouldn't have to adjust the tach cause it was on a 22ret and not a v6?

cause the board on the back of the tach looks different than the other ones I've seen online it has a split board see photo below 4th photo down. I know to get the lead for the tach off of the negative side of the coil.

^6 should I put every bulb back in the 22ret cluster when I install it?

^7 cause my truck is 22r so no check engine light?
^8 or does every circuit have to be able to make a connection?

^9 why is there a wire on every pin connecter on the cluster but not every pin on the wiring harness plug is full?

^10 I also read that I had to switch all the wires around between connectors?
^11 is this for the digital turbo gauges only?
^12 does anybody have a diagram of the wiring harness for dlx and turbo?
cause all the wires that are on the connecters between my dlx and that 4runner sr5 match exactly in color but again my new gauge is a turbo and the tach looks different than all the sr5 ones I've seen online.

connecter A they both had the yellow and green wires I have since removed the yellow wires from the 4runner connector but my dlx didn't have the three other wires green purple and black.

connecter C the dlx has a yellow wire if you look at the pic its the third one from the right and the 4runner doesn't have it. what is that wire?
