Difference between 84 22r and 85 22r?
I have the opportunity to purchase a cheap block and cylinder head from someone. I want to use the cylinderhead on my 84 block in my 4runner because mine is toast, but I don't know if this block is the older pre-85 22r or 85 and new 22r. I know the differences in deck height makes swapping cylinderheads between the two engines difficult, but my question is this;
Is there any way of physically telling the difference between the two? A number or engine code stamped on the block or cylinder head? The guy who's selling it doesn't know the year of the vehicle the 22r came out of.
Thanks in advance,
Peter v.

84 cylinder heads will have one stud in the middle of the exhaust manifold. 85 has two.
Also, if the water pump is still on there, the top edge of the water pump is straight on 84-earlier, and curved on 85+ engines.
They also have stamped casting numbers on the block, tho I do not know if Toyota can tell you any information with it.
