1985 Toyota Pickup Xtended Cab SR5 4x4

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Just bought this truck a couple weeks ago. Went to Jiffy Lube the other day to change out my transfer case fluid and the guys there said why was there ATF Fluid coming out of my T-case?.... They said it calls for GL-5, not ATF which is apparently only used in the v6, so they went ahead and put in GL-5 in my t-case.
So...what fluid really goes in the t-case for the '85 pickup auto trans?
Should I go back cause they screwed it up or am I fine with GL-5 in my t-case for the auto trans?
I've searched and google'd but still get conflicting answers...

and it also says to use GL-5 but does not specify if its for the manual or auto trans

Just went ahead and checked my Chilton manual as well and it calls for ATF fluid for the transfer case for automatics... god this is so confusing
FSM says GL-5 but doesn't specify what transmission type
Chilton says ATF for auto trans
Jiffy Lube says GL-5 for auto trans?..

your problem is that you went to jiffy lube. im not knocking on anyone thats on this forum who works there cause there are some good people that work at jiffy lube but id say most of the people who work there dont have a clue. ive heard nightmares of things happening after going to this place. wrong fluids, not screwing the oil filter back on all the way... then stuff going wrong. once you research it and if you find a mistake bring it back and tell them to fix it. my .02 cents

The FSM states API GL-4 or GL-5, SAE 75W-90 for all 1985 PU & 4Runner transfer cases. Nevermind what Chilton says, not the most reliable source for specifications.

I have the same site saved on my desktop here at work but it's the section for the 90 to 95 4Runners. According to that, the 3vz-e gets dextronII and anything except the 3vz-e (22re) gets 75W90 gl-4,5. I would use gl-4 for a t/c with a manual tranny. I was looking at marlincrawler.com and it looks like:

"all 1979-1995 gear drive transfer cases.

This is the most complete kit on the market! Includes our Heavy Duty rear EcoSeal, all seals including the transmission output, felts, speedometer sender and oil pump o-rings, top and forward shifting base gaskets, as well as L-, G-, and W-series transmission tailhousing gaskets. Please select 21- or 23-spline for the transmission output seal type."

I don't know if the chain drive t/c's take different oil. I'll try and look into more for you. You can also see which one and look for threads about the subject here. Both my 4Runner's are manuals and they take the GL-4 oil. I believe my 88's t/c was chain and took the same oil as the gear case. And I believe my cousin's 95 auto took ATF in the transfer case. How to ID Gear Drive Case
If you have 7 bolts in the rear cover then you have the gear driven unit.
If you have 5 bolts holding the rear cover then you have the chain drive unit.
Bolt #7 is behind the drive shaft and can't be seen in this picture.

Thank you! I will go ahead and keep the GL-5 in there. Would having any ATF in my t-case from the PO ruin anything?

Yeah I know people usually crap on Jiffy Lube but I've been going to ours for over 4 years now with no problem (small town) until this happened.

A lot of chain drive cases use ATF. It's just a light viscosity oil with red dye and a lot of detergents. I think most all the NP cases use ATF.
