Dash removal (ac controls)

Dash removal (ac controls)
I looked through the FSM, but I couldn't find the proper way to remove the dash in order to get the ac/heat controls out. My switches are all broken and I need to install the new unit. Does anyone have experience with this?
Edit- I found it in the FSM under "safety pad", but it still doesn't give a very detailed description.

What vehicle are we talking about here? You should put it in your signature.
On my pick up, the ac button and slider handles pop off, then you can easily pull the dash off/pry the control face off. Then just unscrew the controls.

ONce you unscrew the controls, contorting the thing out without cracking or breaking the dash is the problem.
On 89-95 trucks and 2nd gen 4runners, you can just unscrew the upper center vent tube, and the assembly will slide up and out.
But beware! You have to pop it down and forward, before you go up and out. There is a hook welded to the dash support bar that will stop it from moving straight up. Of you try to force it or pry on it, you'll break the whole thing and have a big mess.

Yes you need to remove the dash to get to the heater controls, its not as hard as it looks. ive done 2 heater cores in 85 4Runners so to me removing the dash isn`t hard, just time consuming.
