I have issues with starting my 85' 22re after letting it sit for a while. Sometimes it takes a solid 20 seconds of turning her over to finally start up.

So I went out and bought a new cold start injector and switch. And it only helps when the motor has been sitting in a cold environment for a long time. But if the motor isn't really 100 percent "cold" it doesn't help

I'll try and give you a scenario here, If I go to bed and wake up early in the morning say when it's still pretty cool outside around 7am all she needs is like 2 cranks and it'll fire right up, BUT say I go to bed and come out at 1 pm the next day. Technically it's still a cold start. But since it's warm outside, it takes forever to start. This is just the problem I'm having. If the motor is not literally "cold" enough it takes a while to start up.

You being in California and this time of year, I don't think it is the cold start injector causing you an issue but wonder if it is more of a fuel supply or fuel filter issue. Sounds like it is having to fill the fuel rail back up with fuel and the cold start injector might be giving enough fuel to start it and then the pressure builds up that it runs.

Might check the fuel filter. Does the flapper in the AFM move freely? If it is slow to move, which activates the COR, which activates the fuel pump, may be slow to engage the fuel pump. Just some suggestions that I would look into.

Next time you have a warm start issue, try the following. Remove the plastic tube between the AFM and Throttle body. Have someone or you can prop the flapper about halfway open and see if it starts any quicker. It will idle rough but should start quicker if the flapper is slow to move and not engaging the COR/Fuel pump quick enough.

I have a long wooden dowel that I use to prop the flapper against the distributor and this test works when I am looking into a hard starting issue. Once it is started, you can rev the motor up at the throttle body as it is getting air thru the throttle body and the flapper is open tricking the computer into thinking it all connected. I will rev up rough just due to the flapper not opening and closing due to the amount of air flowing but it will run.

Alright I'll definitely give that a shot next time I have a day off.

Funny thing is that I blew the head gasket not to long ago and after getting the top end all redone I went to start it and it wouldn't start so I threw a new fuel filter on there just in case that was the more cheap simple reason.
Turned out it was the AFM. Took a poop on me during the rebuild I guess so I bought a new one. So I have almost brand new fuel filter and AFM. Which Is funny that you mention those two things.
But I'll definitely try taking that off and see if I can get some positive results from it!

Ok guys I have a similar problem with my Toyota too. Not just when it's cold outside. If my truck sits over night when I go to start it, it will crank for 20 seconds then it slowly picks up and idles fine. Once the motor warms up it starts at the touch of the key until it sits for a few hours then it's hard to start again. Anybody have any ideas? Fuel pump works fine has new fuel filter too, put new injectors in it last Year but had the problem before that too.cant be cold start injector because it can be 80 degrees outside and it still has the problem. Good compression and flap moves freely in the afm.

Having same symptoms. Happens at first attempt in the morning, so at first I thought it could be the CSI system, so I checked resistances of CSI timer and CSI itself. All within spec.

However, sometimes after driving a couple miles until engine is hot, I'd buy something at O'Reilly (takes 10 minutes), or speak with body shop guy for about same length of time, and it would have crank but I sense no combustion (no VROOM).

Used to be so random like it would happen once a year, but it had been happening this past week.

I have already verified that CSI timer switch and CS injector resistances are within specs. However, I haven't checked if CSI indeed is working or if clogged.
