can this be removed/replaced?

This it pretty pitted and it looks like in the FSM that is can be removed and replaced although, I'm not sure. It looks like it's all one part.

looks like the bearing race in the knuckle ball on a solid front axle. yes it can be removed and replaced.

get a knuckle service kit with bearings from trail gear. second or third item down on this page ---> http://trail-gear.com/knuckle-service.html

install instructions on this page. a picture showing the race removal is about 2/3 down the page http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/mainte...nd/solid_axle/

any rust or pitting on the knuckle ball itselff can be lightly sanded to remove it.

Trail gear has got a good rebuild kit for your front solid axles. Not at a bad price either. And very helpful people.

That would be the trunnion bearing.

Trunion bearing race. Replace and match with the bearing.

One on top and bottom. Knock the top one out from the bottom and vice versa. Clean up the backside and you will see 2 little indentions in the knuckle ball to expose the backside of the race where you can hammer it out with a punch.

You have come this far so you might as well rebuild the whole axle.

I bought the whole hub rebuild kit from you, I haven't had a chance to thoroughly look through it (i've been painting stuff). Does the race come with the kit?

Yep, all bearings typically come with their own race. Let me know if you need something else when you start rebuilding. I did a whole front axle in about 3 hours last weekend.

I've got a question. I just got the trunnion bearing races removed. The last thing I have to do is remove the inner oil seal on the axle. The small one. I can't get it out for the life of me, granted I don't have an oil seal puller. I'm regretting it at the moment. I think I've found that oil seals are my one of my least favorite things. Is there any advice or simple way to remove them (I'm being careful b/c I don't want to damage the area where it seats).

I doing this same project on my rig. Get a seal puller. It doesnt cost much. I got one for under 10 bucks. Works slick. I would fight them in the past with a screw driver and a pair of pliers. I have my inner seal out in no time with the puller. im sure if i didnt get one i would still be fighting it. They are hard to get at.

does anyone have tips on how to seat the trunnion bearing race? Tapped it evenly and then placed a piece of wood on top of it and then beat it with a hammer and it's not going in anymore. It seems like it needs to be pressed in, but I don't have anything like that. I've looked around and have nothing. Any ideas or suggestions?

If there's a sweet tool that will make life easy then speak up.

Yes, I got a seal puller. You must be careful with them though because they can possible scratch the wall.

Anyone know about the trunnion bearing race tool? I see this one on harbor freight (just a shop close to me)

What is the difference between these two? One almost looks plastic, but one is also chamfered more than the other. Any insight on them?

I picked up the second one recently, since I am going to replace my wheel bearings. Its a nice looking setup and has the sizes I need for the wheel bearing races. It looks like one of them should fit the trunnion bearing race as well.

Though I have never done a trunnion bearing my self.

Will be using it this week, so far I have only test fitted it with the old races I pounded out of my spare hubs. I don't see any reason it won't work or hold up. I wouldn't buy the plastic looking kit though, get the aluminum set.

I might try it tomorrow, before I mask them off for paint.

I don't know if you have the FSM or not but it looks like the factory SST is just a round disk with a shaft made for being struck with a hammer. The aluminum seal/bearing driver kit should work.
