hi in new here. i got my first Toyota ever so this is a learning curve. i have a 85 sr5 4we with the 22rec engine. its a mess! have the fsm and have been doing some research. computer is fried. wiring harness to efi and computer is sliced in about 15 places. its wired to only run on the cold start injector (wtf!!) the fuel pump is switched.etc etc etc.
being its such a mess. in wondering why couldn't i just remove all the efi and bolt on a carb intake and carberater? are the bolt patterns different from the efi and carb engines?
$$$ is an issue so redoing the wiring harness new computer and then trying to figure out what was exactly done to this.engine....then fixing the problem is not going to happen, plus in not a efi guy anyways. carbs are the way to go imho.
why are my options?

it has a w56 transmission is there a v6 that's carbereted i can bolt up without fancy expensive adapters? would you stay with 22r and turbo it? in at about 8000 feet and regularly drive over the continental divide about 10500 feet pulling a trailer of about 3000#

just looking to.get this.truck on the road again. new for me toy so just need some knowledge from some Toyota guys. thanks!!

Welcome to YT.

You've got me a bit confused. Looking at your name confusion is probably your natural state.

-are you wanting to fix EFI?
-convert to carb?
- do an engine swap?

Do you have an FSM or a haynes manual?

And do all with not spending any money.

What parts do you have available to you. Converting to 22R will cost you.

Seems to me the cheapest option is to use a good multi meter to troubleshoot your wiring issues.

Take some time do some reading

It is not just bolt on a intake and carb more work then that .

As far as cost no doubt cheaper to fix what you all ready have.

i have a fsm. tooo much rigging to reverse engineer.

to clarify: get rid of the efi
engine swap to a carbereated r22 or a 3.4l
yes buying a engine will cost a few hundred $ far less than fixing this rats nest of a mess.
so that being said i would think a r22 carb engine would be virtually a bolt in option. change fuel pump to a low psi chop out computer and most all sensors and wiring. exhaust should be bolt up tranny should bolt up.

please correct me.if i am wrong here

Intake, fuel pump, distributor, carb, filter housing.

Or consider a wiring harness swap for 22RE. The EFI produces more power than carb'd engine.

The later model 22R had computer too.

Not for the USA market.


With that kind of altitude, you would probably also need all of Toyota's stock High Altitude Compensator (HAC) apparatus that came on the 22R trucks.

I have seen where some one has tried to convert an EFI to Carb and it is a big wiring mess or problematic nightmare. You cant just cut all of the wiring out that you dont need as you still have things bundled up that you have to keep.

I would suggest find what section of wiring you need, Main Harness, Injector Harness, Headlight Harness, or the Taillight/Fuel circuit harness and replace it or do a full on carb conversion. Doing a complete conversion, find a donor truck. Toyota changes a lot of things even within the same year.

I have never had a turbo truck but a friend of mine has and they seemed to have several issues in my opinion that I prefer not to deal with. He knows these trucks better then I do and he gets frustrated with them. Just my 2 cents on that. There are some power upgrades that can help that I have seen.
