Building 22R long block, I need advice!
Hello, I am new to the forum and recently purchased my first Toyota. A 1985 Toyota Pickup, 22R, 2 wheel drive, 5 speed W52 trans, extended cab, no power steering. I absolutely love the truck and it was "blown up" when I got it. The engine ran, but barely. I got an amazing deal on the truck, too good to pass up. Anyways, I found out after pulling the engine that the truck actually got an 84 model engine. I opted to get a late model long block and finish the build myself. I have run into some issues I'm not familiar with. I am removing all of the EGR and emissions equipment as instructed on this thread :

When I removed the engine from the truck I was going to have my machinist/builder take the engine apart and I was going to order parts and have him rebuild the engine and do the machining. We came to find that the engine was the early model and I decided to get the long block. Anyways, I didn't take the original engine apart so I'm picking through a box of bolts and parts trying to assemble this engine. With the necessary parts form the original. I have purchased a new timing cover, new oil pump, new water pump, all gaskets and seals, weber 32/36 carb with manual choke and also a shorty header.
MY QUESTON IS: Can I use my intake off of the early engine? The guy at LCEperformance said that some were different and wouldn't work. How do I know If I can use my original intake? Im confused about 1 part of the head where there is a water jacket that is exposed between cylinder 3 and 4. see the picture

I see, between 3&4. If I recall that hole is very shallow and does not go into the water jacket. I also belive it serves no purpose. For your sake I hope I'm right...
That hole between 2 and 3 coresponds with the inlet heater tube that wraps behind the cylinder head at the firewall. It also has a bimetal VSV for the choke operation at that location and it needs to be installed before the intake...
I know the deck height of a pre '85 block is different and you will need the correct timing cover but your old intake should bolt right up with no issues.
Let's see some pictures of the truck.

That is the same intake I've put on a number of 22r motors, all '85+.
I've seen cast marks with a shallow depression at that location but never into the water jacket, even on EFI...
Are you absolutely sure its a coolant passage?
