Blown head gasket

Well pretty sure my head gasket blew today on our way out of Death Valley. Got lucky and was able to drive the last hour and half home at about 25 mph. Started burning oil/coolant and then Running like real ˟˟˟˟.

So what all should be rebuilt/machined while I rip it apart.

What are good complete rebuild kits. Is there anywhere I can get a good used motor for cheap.

Sorry about your bad luck. I had the same thing happen on my truck earlier this year.

I usually see people recommending Engnbldr: http://www.engnbldr.com/

The rebuild kits are reasonably priced. I was going to go that route, but then decided I should just go with a whole new engine.

From what I know, you need to have the head machined, and the mating surface on the block, there could have been warpage. And your block could have possibly been cracked. That is the bare minimum. You will likely need more than that though.

My new engine was 1500.00 and the install was 1000.00. I got back 300.00 on the core charge, my block and head were still able to be used. But you may not be able to do that with other engine sellers. I got my engine from a Toyota shop in San Jose.

Where are you located? That is information needed to give you a good recommendation.

I am sure there will be others who can give you better advice than mine.

Good luck.

Oh, and I do not reccomend going cheap on a new engine. You really do get what you pay for. And the heart of your truck is no place to skimp. If you get a new motor you may be able to sell parts off the old one to recoup some expenses.

Excellent. That is what I did too. New block and head.

The price is pretty close to what I paid as well. I would imagine shipping all the way to Mammoth Lakes is the difference.

I got my motor from Independent Toyota Dismantler in San Jose. They have a partnership with SOS auto a few miles away where the install was done.

I was very happy with SOS, and Independent was good to work with as well. I have had to take it back once for them to repair something on my warranty. Independent gave me a 1 year unlimited mile warranty on the parts, and SOS gave me a 3 month warranty on labor.

I wanted to warn you though, there is someone in the Bay Area operating under the name "We Have Engines" the owners name is Arley Leghorn, from everything I have read about him he is not to be trusted. He has changed his business name 3 or 4 times in the last 6 or so years. He has had multiple E-bay accounts suspended due to shoddy work and backing out of his promised 3 year warranty. I see him advertising on Craigslist quite a bit. He does the work out of various places, and offers free towing so you don't know where your vehicle is, and can't find him once your motor goes bad. Do a search for his name and you will find out about his dirty dealings. I almost used him to do my engine, the 3 year warranty looked good, and his total price for the engine and install was 1,200 or so. But I did some research, and I am glad I did.

So definitely look into who you are getting to do your engine. This is a lot of money to trust someone with.

If you are able to get a new engine for 1800$ then I say do it.

I had mine rebuilt, from top to bottom. And put in an engnbldr timing kit, cover and cam. After all the odds and ends I was not far from your 1800$ quote.

I am assuming that they will give you some type of warranty also??

Well problem is I got a bunch of quotes and can't remember who that was from. Hahaha. Also I'm a little concerned because it's a new motor making it not a toyota. Need to look more into it. Gonna fix my taco in the mean time.

Well it's $1820 shipped for a complete new engine. NewCYLINDER HEAD

CYLINDER BLOCK

CAMSHAFT

CRANKSHAFT

PISTON & RINGS

MAIN & ROD BEARINGS

ALL GASKETS

INTAKE & EXHAUST VALVES

Non of above components are re-used from old cores. So our engine is like a "0" mileage engine.

This is from engine world inc in Houston tx. Anyone ever deal with them. Motor does come with a 6month warranty.

I would be able to sell the carb intake exhaust manifold from it to make back some money.

Or I can get the head resurfaced from a local shop and valve work for $225.

We'll 5 mins of research and I'm thinking they are not a reputable company.

Here is a link to ripoffreport.com all saying bad things about the company. Some getting "new" motors with sludge in the oil pan and broke. Bolts in the head. Not what I want

It has been a few months but I checked with the Toyota dealer in my area and there was 5 motors left and if I recall right were short blocks at about $2500. That is what my dealer said. I can not confirm. He did say once the New Old Stock was exhausted that they were not replenishing the motors. Guess they are still available in other countries though.

You can get new motors but I understand they are manufactured in China, not my preferred place. I have heard of Arley Leghorn and he is not getting any good reviews. Been a few years but I seen his comments on someone wanting some warranty work and he was not helping them.

Hey guys so got the motor pulled out(two guys two tow straps) and took it to a shop hitch turned out to be a joke shop(original quote was$1100-1300 for a complete rebuild. After they washed it quoted me at $2300-$2500. I would recommend not going to Aims machine shop sparks,NV) and so now have a 22r in pieces and gonna either have the block and head machined at another shop and rebuild myself. Or try to buy another complete engine. The shop said the head isn't usable or the cam. Gonna have another opinion on the head in a couple days.

Recommendations on places to get 84 heads.
Has anyone used shop.headsonly.com also known as cylinder heads international out of Dallas Texas I believe. They are saying $275 for a rebuilt head with a cam. Or I have seen yotashop.com has them for $450 w/cam

Waiting on a price from Toyota for a head and engine. Before I got a quote for $1800 for a rebuilt from Toyota.

Any good rebuild threads here. Know I've seem a couple before but don't have the time right now to search around.

Man really frustrating having to deal with shady machine shops.

I have bought several Ford/Mazda CVH heads from headsonly/CHI, and have been very satisfied with their price and quality. One head has been in service over 70,000 mi. with no issues.
I haven't had occasion to buy any Toyota material from them, but I would expect that their Toyota rebuilds would be good as well.
