AZ:Oil Leaking Front Cover?

AZ:Oil Leaking Front Cover?

So I started work on my $100 truck and all went pretty smooth, except one hold up.

First, I flushed all fluids and filled back up with fresh. [check]

Second, changed out plugs and wires. [check]

Third, took out the "racing" seats and am now looking for stockers [ ]

Then, cleaned the engine [check]

I took the truck around the block after letting her idle for a while. Everything felt decent, and made the power I expected. (no driveline issues)

After I brought her home, I noticed a slight oil smell and opened the hood. Oil was slung from the belts all over the bay. It looks like the front cover is leaking. Is this common? Can I fix without taking out the radiator? Where can I get the gasket?

So I am assuming it's an odd shaped gasket between the block and the cover, or is it a rubber o-ring (like a front main seal or something of that nature)

Wash it again, and run the engine, looking for the source of leakage. It's probably the front main, which requires removal of the crank pulley.

X2!........ Not a difficult fix....hardest part is loosening the crank bolt (I usually do the breaker bar/starter trick) When you get the crank pulley/harmonic balancer off, check for a groove worn into the seal surface if this isn't addressed, it'll soon start leaking again after replacing the seal.....you'll need to get a repair sleeve (sometimes called a speedy sleeve) and that'll take care of it. Trust me on this one.......doh!----------Hans

X2, and get the 'REAL" speedy sleeve not some other brand or type.
I wouldn't attempt the job without removing the radiator. you need some room to work. and radiators are HARD on KNUCKLES LOL

I've done it without touching the radiator, just unbolt the pulley from the balancer (four bolts) and it'll give you plenty of room to slide it off of the crank, remove the oil pump and change the seal. All in all, shouldn't take more than a couple of hours-------------Hans

I have put in a seal in the oil pump and for the crank snout with out removing the radiator. Just make sure you put sealer on the top pasenger side bolt or it will still leak.
