Okay guys I'm probably an idiot and the problem is right in front of me but I could use some help.

Okay here's the rundown 85 Toyota 4runner 22re swapped my power steering pump before king of the hammers marked my distributor before I pulled it and put everything back how I found it, at least I thought I did. So get to the hammers and I'm dealing with over heating radiator boiling over basically a bunch of stuff I didn't want to be dealing with.

Get my rig back home block tested it, everything looks good no blown head gasket. then I stick a timing light on it and I'm about 35-40 degrees advanced. So I'm thinking this is whats causing my overheating is excessive head pressure. So I pull my distributor and roll it over a tooth and now I'm at 0 degrees with my distributor pinned on the advanced side. I'm wondering if maybe there's some procedure of rotating the distributor over 360 degrees or something that might get me closer to my mark. I'm a little stumped but again I feel like I'm making this more difficult than it should be.

Any help would be Awesome!

Below I like the top link better but this is how I go about it. Been several times I have been spot on and did not need to time it with a light when I do everything correctly. When I hooked the timing light to it I did not need to adjust it.

that sounds like the wrong tooth.

did you check the timing initially with the jumper in?

So I have a bit of an update on this problem and it wasnt timing related but it made it seem like I was having a timing problem. Further investigation found that my keyway on my crankshaft had sheered in half allowing my harmonic balancer to spin freely on my crank. so it was showing really off timing readings when I was trying to make my adjustments. oddly enough my ac power steering and water pump were not really seeing much of an issue. Not sure if you guys have seen or herd of anything like this but I found it a bit odd that it happened.

o.k., that's pretty bizarre! i hope that the nose of the crank wasn't damaged too badly.

it had a little damage but nothing to bad i cleaned it up a bit with some sand paper and everything is fitting on there good still, although the harmonic balancer was totaled
