85 4x4 messed up
i am working on my neighbor's 80 ? toyota 4x4 . he took it apart 12 yrs ago then got real sick( wheel chair bound, can't drive anymore). and his father wants to reassemble the 4x4 i have it most of the way back together trying to fix the screw up the two kids he hired to fix it 12 yrs ago did. all that was missing was the oil pan, drive gear and fuel pump eccentric and bolt, and the two drive lines and the spindle on the transfer case and the nut for it and a bunch of the nuts and bolts, and the dist. this truck was down to the short block, no tranny or transfer case and all i have are my memory and a bunch of tools and a haynes manual. should i drop the gas tank and flush it out? i have already blew out the lines that were packed with mud. the father is not going to drive it much and just around town. the hard part is going to be hoisting the son into the the truck with the lift kit and all. the truck was rolled a long time ago and the son did a frame up restore and the truck looks nice until he got sick now he cannot even go outside alone anymore. he used to sell a lot of used parts and still has a treasure trove i don't know if you knew him his name is jeff sturgion and i would really like to get his truck running before he passes the sickness he has usually kills in three years and he has had it for 12.

...yes the tank needs to be removed and cleaned out.
Good Luck with you project, sounds like a chore. Post pics!
I was building a motor for a client, the truck was sitting for 15 years, I advised him to drop the tank and clean pressure wash the inside or replace the tank. All he did was dump out the old gas and put in new gas. He said the tank was fine.
Well the honey like resin in the tank made it to the combustion chamber. After the first cool down the valves stuck in place and when he went to start it up the next morning he bent 3 valves.
He finally dropped the tank and found 1-2" of gas resin at the bottom.

i am planning on dropping the tank as soon as they can get me back up to their house. his wife had a stroke and he is kinda busy with her. i was planning on hooking up a fuel line to the fuel pump to see how everything sounds for now. he is on a tight budget so i have to go cheap but not too cheap.
