85 4runner lug centric/hub centric and spacers

I recently bought a mostly stock 85 runner with lug centric steel wheels. I was interested in replacing them with my 95 runner hub centric aluminum wheels. I understand the spacer requirement. However, it seems that if I used hub centric spacers on the rear, the spacers would mount on the lugs only. The rear hub is considerably smaller than the '95 hub. So is this ok or would I need "hub spacers" for the rear wheel spacers? Hope that made sense...

I am also considering just cleaning up and painting the steel wheels. My other question is: Are the lug centric steel wheels ok long term? Am I correct to conclude that the stock 85 runners came with lug centric wheels? The steel wheels I have now are not stock and there is a considerable gap between the rear hub and the wheel hub opening. I'm also worried about using spacers and all the potential repercussions. I apologize if this has been answered already, but I couldn't find any threads referring to this specific situation. thanks
