The first or second time I did one of these SA rebuilds I did read about the hub and the spring and ball but in all the confusion of the rebuild I sorta forgot about it. As a result when I pulled the dial off the spring sent the ball flying into oblivion. I thought oh well how important can that stupid little ball be? After I got it all back together I turned the hub dial and nothing! I had to order a new spring and ball from Wabfab. That stupid tiny little ball kept my rig in the driveway for 3 days.
Yea it sucks but that thing is absolutely required to make that hub function.

Just got done with my transmission and transfer case (put a trail gear kit in).
If any one wants pictures I've got tons.
Looking at rebuilding the steering knuckles.
How did you get the steering arms off of the knuckle housing?
Toyota want a fortune for that little pusher tool of theirs.
Are there any standard tools that can push them out?

I just unbolted them, and hit the studs with a brass drift to pop the cones out..

Us, california guys have a way easier time than most with the cone washers hehe, get some PB blaster and soak the cone washers, take a brass punch and a hammer and give them all a whack until they come loose. Be careful not to damage anything, don't be Donkey Kong, but you can give them a solid hit.

Re torque specs for '84 Toyota front suspension, steering knuckle studs and nuts

Great write-up, Toyospearo. I'll be drawing from this in the future for sure.

As for some of those torque specs - and others will hopefully chime in here to correct me if I am mistaken - many of them are very hard to find for an '84. It has taken me quite awhile to learn what the torque spec for an '84 steering knuckle stud and bolt are, for one example. Trailgear told me that the steering knuckle studs should sit at about 45 lb. ft. and the four 18mm steering knuckle nuts should be torqued to about 80-85 lb. ft. That's what I'll go with as I check torques in preparation for a trip this weekend.

Anyone else got reliable/accurate torque numbers for front suspension components on an '84?

I have schematics, 71'lbs, steering knuckle.
34' lbs bearing cap. I am rebuilding an axle as we speak and will use these specs.

So what is a list of tools needed for this job. Do I need to take the tierod/draglink off. So I need a special tool for that. Also the fsm say you need a special tool to remove the old bearings. Someone please help.

Thanks, this helps me get up the courage to take mine apart next week. If there are more pics, or other threads, maybe with the tear down tips, that'd be a bonus!!!!

It's not hard just messy. Have plenty of paper shop towels to clean up all te nasty gear oil. I would also recommend changing your TRE while you're in there. I don't have any year down photos either. To messy. Maybe you can be the one to take them.
