Trying to get my 4runner working after a motor swap. put in the 22re out of an 85, but installed the carb setup from my 84. I reused the eccentric from the old cam on the 22r, but I can't get the fuel pump to pump.

do the mechanical fuel pumps need to be primed??

I know everything else works, because I wired up an electric pump just to see and it run, but not right (electric pump wans satrong enough to handle full throttle under load)

any ideas appreciated

info: 1984 carb intake, mech pump and distributor (with MSD 6al) installed on 1985 block and head, eccentric installed), fuel not pumping, what do????

make sure you have the 3 lines hooked up properly and you didn't mix up the vent, return and supply lines, also did you reinstall the fuel pump spacer between the pump and head? You have fuel right? It might also take a bit to get the fuel to the carb as well. If your certain you have the lines correct, you can try to dump some fuel or starter fluid into the carb to somewhat jump start it. Also make sure you have power to the cut-off solenoid. If not it won't let fuel into the carb. I don't know how you troubleshooted the fact you have no fuel supply.

got the lines right, because I messed around with them to get the electric pump working. Fuel tank is full, and checked all the lines for leaks. I'll have to check the fuel cut solenoid, might be something there, didn't change anything there, and truck ran fine before other than the rods knocking like bolts in a tin can.

Also, the spacer: there wasn't a spacer between the old head and the pump. Is that something specific to the later 22r's vs the tall deck 22r it came with??

if so, Anyone got a measurement on how thick the spacer should be

no all 20r and 22r fuel pumps need the spacer. I believe it's close to 1/4" but I would not recommend making your own.

Did you pull the line off the carb and crank the motor a couple times to see what comes out? Any idea how the fuel filter looks? Make sure it is a cheap carb fuel filter, too.

When first starting my truck after it has been sitting for a long time, it takes a good 10-20 seconds of cranking before the bowl fills and it will start. Pull the line that goes from the pump to the carb bowl and stick it in a empty plastic water bottle and cram it under the air cleaner so it stays put while ya crank and see if it fills some after a few cranks. Then go from there.

The 22r came with an extra ring on the timing gear that pumps the fuel pump. If you pull the valve cover off you'll be able to see of your 22re has it or not. It will be touching the arm of the fuel pump. I don't know but maybe the 22re did not come with this part?

You reused the 22r cam, but did you leave that ring off when swapping it over?

That "ring" is what drives the pump, it causes the arm to move back and forth. Kind of like pumping water manually from a well. If you don't have it there then you definitely won't be getting fuel.

Hey all,

Yes, I did put the fuel pump eccentric on the end of the cam. I didn't reuse the old 22r cam because the lobes were wrote off

And yes, new fuel filter installed, proper carb type.

We just changed the head gasket on my 87 pickup. got it started and but leaks gas from the fuel pumps weep hole. could that ring have been put back on in the wrong position? would that make a difference or is it just a bad fuel pump?
