Ok, so everyone is trying to upgrade the front bucket seats in their 4 Runners, right? Well, what about the rear seat? What upgrade option is available (if any?)

Also, I know my rear seat locking mechanism sucks balls. If I have cargo in the back and I go down an incline, when the weight of the cargo shifts forward it always makes the back of the seat un hook. I don't think the locking mechanism is factory. I always have to put a racheting strap around the rollbar and seat to keep from unlatching.

Any ideas on seat replacements / upgrades? How about better locking for the seat back when wheelin?

i don't think there is an option for after market. since rear seats don't get as thrashed as front buckets, maybe the part yards will have decent stock. custom upholstery is expensive, but maybe be a good option for some. i think there are after market jump seats for jeeps, maybe fab them in?

I had the problem with my first gen. The stock latch wouldnt click all the way onto the hook that holds the seat up. I Just pulled the pin up that releases the seat and slammed it back untill i could get it to latch...never had any problems from that point on..

You could always get take your factory front seat out and see if it will fit in the back, if it does, you can get some aftermarket buckets and stick them back there. Just a thought. I was thinking about puttin one seat in the middle of the rear so that I can take a 3rd person and everyone has the support of a bucket.

I wasn't thinking as much aftermarket as I was thinking of retro fitting something else in from a different vehicle. Additionally, I thought about buckets too! I would think about a quick release set up though as I don't want to loose the nice cargo area when the back seat folds up. I don't have a split bench backseat, it's a one piece from side to side. It does have the rear cushion that is seperate and folds up against the front buckets.

I would love to have buckets front @ back and shoulder belts in the back too. I haven't gotten to putting those in yet.

Do you have the "OEM" split rear seats from the later 4Runner or do you have the "port added" bench rear seat from the earlier models?

I just installed the split rear seats - they seem pretty good.

I believe they are the 'port' added bench rear seat. The split bench might be a nice change of pace.

I'm replacing my one piece bench seat in the rear of my 84 for a new one out of an SR5 85. It's a split seat so I can fold down half of it. My stock seat doesn't have any hardware to lock the seat down, it just flops around and folds up when I hit the brakes hard.

Probably not the best seat to put my 2 year old daughter on. The only negative of the new seat is it's grey and everything is brown in my 4Runner. Not a big deal.

My plan is to install 2 bucket seats in the back to make it more comfortable for the long trips to Mexico. So far I have the bucket seats out of a Rav 4 but I need to weld up a frame system that will bolt to the truck. That may be a while since I don't have a welder yet. The plan is to push the seats back so there is more leg room and also keep the reclining ability of the seat. If anyone has tried buckets in the back please give us some advice.

Well, that is my concern is the full bench seat doesn't have the locks like the split bench does. Mine is just a crappy spring loaded angle hook that comes undone if the seat back moves from left to right. I just thnk we need to come up with a good aftermarket option that will have the capability to fold up and give you the storage with having comfy seats! YOU *CAN* HAVE YOU CAKE & EAT IT TOO!

The "seat" area is pretty high up. Good luck using bucket seats.

IMHO the split seats are pretty comfy

Four ADULTS on a road trip - not happening ...
2+ "twenty somethings"on a road trip - ye haw

1-2 kids in back - should be fine

Anybody know if the split seats on 2nd gen or even 3rd gen might be adapted? Maybe with a little fab work?

the backs made for kids, thats why they kinda sit on a deck.

There's just got to be a alternative to the stock seats. Yes, buckets may not be workable because the seat backs are high. Howeverm something out of a Jeep Liberty, Honda CRV or other similar width SUV shoudl fit a Runner with a little fabbing.

The SR5 split bench seats are fairly comfortable and a good upgrade, but may be hard to come by.

Those are actually kind of cool! It would just suck cuz you would loose the fold up seat with those. I guess a couple bolts removed and you got storage back!

I'd like to find some option that would allow for a 4 point harness in the rear, or a shoulder belt.

Quick, someone design a folding rear seat that gives good belt options and is still very comfy!

outboard shoulder belts.

There are THREE options (that Im aware of) for shoulder belts
a) OEM lap and shoulder clip (non retractable shoulder)
b) the Toyota front from a std cab
c) aftermakert retractable DOT belts (about $70 each - new and DOT compliant)

For a 4 point - weld up a cross bar that "hangs" off the roll bar "C pillars" or use a standard "sport compact" seat belt bar.
