Exclamation 22r heating up

I have an 85 sr5 4x4 ext cab. I recently just swapped a 22re out of an 89 in its place by converting it to carb. This engine has got hot ever since I put it in the truck. I have replaced the thermostat ran it without one replaced the water pump and even flushed the radiator. I dont know where else to look.
Symptoms are as follows.
-temp slowly climbs to normal position
-temp rises slightly above normal then drops back to normal(I think thermostat opening)
-from normal the temp will start to climb slowly til it gets hot
-will not heat up just idling but if i crack the rpms a little(2000) or so it will heat up

I have never let it get over the top part of the line in the normal mark Just wondering what degree this is and how hot can they get before I really hurt it.
