I have a 1984 pickup with a 1985 22r engine I am rebuilding. I took the cover off the bottom of the intake, and almost all the bolts broke off. I got some out, but some will not. I'm currently working on tapping a plug in the hole that goes from the top thermostat hole to the bottom, and just doing away with the manifold cooler. Does anyone see any problems in doing this or any other ideas? I do not feel it needs colling

You are right, the manifold does not need cooling.

It does, however, need heating.

The hot water passages are there to help prevent carb and manifold icing, and to promote better fuel vaporisation in cooler weather.

Carb icing can occur in temps well above freezing, in damp weather and high mainifold vacuum conditions.

I think LC Engineering may have a block off plate...

I have broken the tiny bolts there before, on two different occurrences. Broken bolts had to be removed. What a pain!

The third time was a charm; having learned the hard way to leave that lower plate alone.

Electrical discharge machining gets broken bolts, bits or extractors out of aluminum without hurting it.
I have had broken bolts, drill bits and extractors removed then just put new studs or bolts back in.
It is not very costly and it is a perfect way to get the job done.
