1985 4Runner High Idle
I kind of just realized that my yota has been idling too high (1100rpm) I discovered it when I was helping a friend with their car the other day. I had one of those moments where I realized my rig was at 1100 and probably had been since forever? I cant even remember it ever idling at 800 or 900rpm, and ive been living with the car since I was a tot. The decal on the hood calls for 750, the owners manual calls for 700.
I ran a diagnostic and it gave me a #10 error
System: Starter
Diagnosis: No STA signal to ECU when vehicle speed 0km/h and engine is running over 800rpm
Trouble areas: Speed Sensor? Main Relay? IG switch Circuit/ IG switch? ECU?
I don't think its the speed sensor, as all of my instruments are working properly. (mind you, im kind of a hammer and wrench mechanic, so slap me if you have a different thought.)
I suppose it could be an issue with the Main Relay or the ECU? But it seems to me if it were one of the main systems, that I would be having more issues.
Starter is new-ish, and that shouldn't be affecting the idle? When my starter crapped out, maybe 4 years ago, it gave me the same code, which I attributed to the bad starter. It may not have been related to that at all now that I think about it...
I am kind of inclined to believe that the error code is mostly the brain being upset with the high idle, and not necessarily because of a fault with the associated components.
The throttle body does desperately need to be cleaned, but if it aint broke...
I have in recent memory checked most of the vacuum systems, and a quick check today suggests that there aren't any leaks.
I was looking at some other high idle issues and a lot of guys were faulting their throttle position sensor. Should I play with this, or is it likely that something else is at fault?
Thanks for taking the time to read, all suggestions appreciated.
Quick facts about the rig. 1984/85 4Runner, Manual, no AC.
All stock, minus a K&N airfilter and LED Trucklights, some extra lights. 154,000miles one family owned. Normal fuel economy is being maintained. around 19/20mpgs with low temps in the 10s and highs in the 50s with the front hubs locked.

lets see if this helps
ok so I don't know the proper name for the part but you can adjust your idle with a flat head screw driver by turning either clockwise lowers idle and counter clockwise which raises idle. its right next to your throttle in front of the efi casing. have your engine running, do quarter turns and tap the throttle as you adjust to see how your engine settles back to idle. it will take a few times to get it right. I just bought an 85 last week and it was idling 1100, waste of gas. quick adjustment and now its about 6k-8k. my engine is a bit shaky so next is a valve adjustment! take care

I ended up talking to my dad about, he had stated that many many many years ago, he had bumped up the idle at -40F and just left it there. It actually seems to stumble more at 750rpm even when warm so i bumped it to around 8/900 and its happy as a clam.

he probably had to speed up the idle because the cold start circuit quit working right... this is what needs to be done to your '85: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyot...take-swap.html
