1985 4runner clutch

my clutch on the runner went out and I'm replacing it this weekend. I'm having a hard time finding any good build up threads with this in it. If anybody knows of a good build up for this project please give me a linky, or just respons with any advice... thanks!!

It really Isn't hard, pull out tranny yank off clutch, put new clutch in and stick transmission back on. Just make sure you have a friend help, it makes things go much smoother and take your time. The first time I did a clutch was when I swapped my auto for a 5 speed and there weren't any instructions. Probably the hardest part is when you go to stick the transmission back on and try to line up the splines. If you haven't already boughten a Haynes manual for your truck you should probably get one, they aren't as in depth as a factory service manual but they have good info on most do it yourself fixes.

It's pretty straight forward. My truck is ifs, yours may have a little more room being a straight axle(straight axle right??). I did mine by myself and did ok. If you do end up by yourself, get a tranny jack!!!! It'll make it sooooooo much easier!!! A regular floor jack will work, probably better if your isn't lifted 4" on 35's!!! When I took mine apart I had all sorts of stuff missing or leaking...it sucked. If you haven't replaced the rear main, I would try. The front seal on the tranny is also a good idea, its really easy to change. That one was bad on mine and liked to dump 80w90 on my clutch disk. It's up to you, but while your in there...why not? I'm trying to remember how I got the throw out bearing off the hub....hmmmmm, think I used a hammer and a socket. Good luck!!

I just did my clutch and rear main seal on my 85 runner.. Like a ding-dong I didn't change the transmission front seal.. Guess what Im doing this weekend? Remember, to get the pilot bearing out use the "old-timers" trick.. Fill the pilot bearing with grease and use a wood dowel to hammer in gently.. The force of the hammer will act on the grease and push out the pilot bearing.. I was also missing a clip to hold the clutch arm to the clutch release bearing.. Had to order.. Straight-forward job and a great feeling when everythings works great.. Good luck..

It's fairly straight forward. Removing the bell housing bolts at the top can be a bit tricky to get to. Other than that, i used caulk and large screwdriver to pop out the pilot bearing. It's the same principle really. Fill the cavern and the tap the screwdriver or anything the is the diameter of the hole in the pilot bearing. Pressure will push it out. May need to repeat a couple times. Having a trans jack would make it easier. I used two standard floor jacks so rolling them together to get the trans on and off took some work.

Hanes manual is sold at Oreily auto parts and autozone. Definitely worth having.

First you need the clutch for the Turbo because the pins on the flywheel are different.

All my clutches are new but if I was buying another new one I think I would try Marlin Crawlers clutch kit.

I have tried Aisin and Luk in the past Both work for my needs I can`t really tell a difference

as well as cheap clutch kits from Napa that were cheap!!
