1985 22RE Oil Pressure Sensor/Sender/Switch Questions

So, the PO installed an aftermarket oil pressure gauge (well... the gauge and the sender aren't hooked up. I just have a long line of tubing that's melted shut on the end) even though the truck has the stock SR5 gauge (not just a light). There is so much hack job crap under my hood. I'll be wading through all of that over the next few weeks.

He had done something similar with the coolant temperature sensor previously. You guys explained how to fix that yesterday. Thanks! Anyway... I have more questions for you guys.

I've been searching, but, again, I can't find an answer to my specific problem. I have some dangling tubes and wires over there, but none reach to where the stock sending unit would go. Here are some pictures of what I have going on over there.

From the following picture (found on yotatech) and some other forum posts, I can tell that there are two ports:

The aftermarket thing is screwed into the port below the filter, and there is a sender that plugs into the wiring harness threaded into the port to the left of the oil filter. Here is a picture of what's plugged in there:

Then, I found this picture online:

That looks like the connector that I have hanging loose plugged into an idiot light switch which is threaded into the port where my cord won't reach.

I don't have anything that looks like it would hook up to the SR5 gauge sender. Can anyone help me figure out how to get my oil pressure gauge hooked up? I haven't ordered the sender for the SR5 gauge yet because I'm confused about what I actually need to do here. Can anyone explain what's going on here to me?

Please and thanks,
Cabot

I've gone to the mech gauge like you have but the original in my sr5 hooked up like the first pic you found. The idiot light to the left of the filter and the sr5 sender below. I think the second found pic was for a non sr5 (no real oil gauge) so it just had the idiot light sender. If my memory is correct the gauge sender wire was a plastic clip that looks like the one for the idiot light but slides over the round attach point on the sender "sideways" or parallel to the side of the block, not perpendicular like the other plug. Distinctive looking plug. Has a notch down one of the long faces about half way to slide over the sender clip. May have had a rubber boot on it too now that I think about it. Will look in my rig tonight and see if I left it dangling or pulled it when I replaced the gauge. Get a pic if it's still there.

Bump. I'm still at a loss how to get my oil pressure gauge hooked up. My dad had no answers. I talked to a friend who is a Toyota tech for about an hour the other day. He couldn't explain what was going on here either.

To get the SR5 gauge working you will have to get that pigtail for the sender that will plug into that plug in your first pic. To get the aftermarket gauge working you will have to take some pics of the back of the gauge and all the wiring you have for it so we can see what your working with.

Awesome. That's what I really wondered... About that pigtail. I was beginning to think that it had to exist, but the Toyota parts guy told me that it didn't. Thank you!

pigtail you have pictured is for the "idiot light' (straight plug) . guage connector slides on "sideways" although looks the same , is "cut" a little differant

yes and remember the last part of that pigtail pictured above could be missing and you just have the other connector dangling. the dummy light sending unit should be to the left of the oil filter and the gauge bell style sender should be under it (factory anyways, doubt it matters)

Got it. se7enine is sending me both connectors. I just have to wire it up. Thanks!!

I already have the proper Toyota sender threaded into the hole now. I have it hooked up temporarily with a couple of spade connectors that I modified a bit. The key pieces of information that I was initially missing were that the pigtail exists and that it's a single wire connection that just varies the ground.

I need to pick up a stubby 14mm end wrench to thread it a little further in, but it doesn't leak and works as it.

I'll probably wait to wire up the proper connection until three weeks from last Friday. I'm driving up to Nashville and a Toyota Tech FRIEND is helping me build an entire new wiring harness for the truck. He says that he loves wiring and that every connection on the truck will be like it was from the factory. Pictures of that will happen in my build thread: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f198...-build-256417/

Thumbs up Almost same question

So i cant find this connector that is for the oil pressure light. I have put a spade connector on it and tried a few wires down in the area and cant figure it out.
the needle is barried on the guage now and wont move so i definately plugged it into the wrong thing before. I have the part of the wire that plugs onto the oil pressure light but i cant find that connector. Can you take a picture of the wire looking straight on it from the other end so I know what im looking for. I also am going to search about the coolant temp sensor wire because mine isnt reading properly...

Your problems are exactly the same as mine. I'll take some pictures of the connectors tonight or tomorrow. I have the coolant temperature fudge hooked up properly and the parts to make the oil pressure pigtail, but I've been having fits with u joint replacement all day today. I think that I'm buying a vise and some huge channel locks tomorrow. Maybe that will get me sorted. I can't stand to look at the truck right now.

Right on man thanks! I am also having trouble locating my coolant temp wire. I just found the actual sensor and now I can't find the wire!!! Grrr! I am still trying to locate that wire so if you find it let me know! If you need any other help I'll do what I can. I'll hopefully get some pics up too.

I think that my oil pressure gauge isn't reading properly also. It reads a bit low with the DIY pigtail that I currently have installed. I haven't wired the correct connectors up just yet. It should only take a few minutes. The wire is gray with a blue stripe inside a braided gray cloth sheething.

Harness end pigtail connector:

Sensor end pigtail connector:

I am in the dirty south. Thank you though. I'd like to visit that part of the country eventually.

Thanks for the pictures! I still cant find this damn wire!!! What part of the wiring harness does this come from? I took the split-loom apart and I still can't find it! I also am still having trouble finding the wire for the coolant sensor wire as well. I don't know if it is because my block is from an 85 22r or what but the wiring harness is still origional so it should be there...

Hey se7, do you know what that green connector is for? The one that looks like a fuel injector connector but is hanging there empty in your photo? I seem to have every connector in my harness accounted for except this one.

Nevermind I figured it out, it's for the Idle Air Control Valve.
