1985 22RE missing terribly - out of nowhere
#21
Almost success!! Due to the weather in the Northeast, my new CLT isn't here yet (not sure why it shipped from CA to MA to NH to get to AL, but whatever!). BUUUUT, I went down to radioshack and picked up a potentiometer and a 0.47 ohm resistor. I used the pot to set about 2 ohms (I couldn't find a resistor that size) to let the truck warm up and after it did I put the 0.47 ohm resistor on there with some e-tape to keep it safe. Those resistances come out to about 60*F and about 170*F respectively. When it's getting proper resistance according to temp, that thing runs awesome! I'm going to drive around a bit this afternoon, and I've still got the pot to use for warm-up if my CLT doesn't make it in tomorrow. It's kind of a pain, but it makes me happy to see it running. Good thing I don't need to commute in it, hahaha.

THANKS!!!! I have tried finding these online with no success. I appreciate you posting these up for me. I need to get 8 of these on order as I have two harnesses that the connectors were tore up on me when I got them. Thanks again.

There's a slot in the side of the connector that's centered. It needs to be off center. The connector I linked won't work.
Back to searching the internet.
Good news is that I made a new makeshift metal clip using a paperclip so the old broken connector will stay put on the new sensor until I can find the right new connector.

At least you know what the problem is and is just a matter of finding the correct part. Worse case scenario is to get another out of the boneyard. Probably not much better then what you have, but I have done it in the past.

Rock auto replied to my email. They don't have and can't special order the right one. I'm going to shoot the manufacturer a picture of what I bought vs what I need and if they can't come up with the right part I've decided to just dremel the index off of the sensor itself. Then the connector will fit snug and secure.

I'm not sure, I just called 22RE Performance and they shipped me one. Way cheaper than the dealership.
If you're not idling up I'd start looking more along the lines of your aux air valve. Idle speed is more controlled by air than by anything else.

Subscribed to this thread. Am starting a top to bottom inspection of my newly acquired 1985 4runner and some troubleshooting as well, I have an intermittent idle/miss issue. You seem a lot more knowledgeable on the mechanics/electronics than I am
Looking forward to your progress.

When's the last time you changed plugs and wires? I cleaned up a slight idle stumble with new wires a while back. I wasn't sure on the ignition history so I just swapped everything to new parts (dist cap, rotor, wires, coil, plugs).

CLT is a coolant temp sender that I believe the ecu uses to set different fueling tables and maybe timing tables based on engine temp. That's just my guess.
Good news is that my truck has drastically reduced the "rough running after cranking" events. They're limited to a specific temperature on warm start now. But it happens rarely enough to this point that I haven't gotten around to further troubleshooting. If it happens I manually throttle up and hold the engine to ~1500 rpm until it quits. Usually that's about 10-15 seconds. When it happens and I just let it idle on its own it's a pretty violent event. If you have a slight stumble if look at plugs/wires first.

Cleaned my throttle body yesterday & got a ton of gunk out. Truck runs like a top now & idles at 1000RPM, no issues.
