Question 1984 solid axle grease and oil

Hi all. I am in the process of changing the inner seals on my front axle. I am just wondering what oil and grease are to be used in it.

Also can the gaskets on the back of the knuckle be reused. Can they be made from generic gasket material? What about the locker gasket. Easily made or no?

I am new to this whole Toyota truck thing hence all the questions but am enjoying it so far.

Thanks in advance.

No you cannot make the knuckle seals they are special. DO NOT REUSE!! You can make your own gaskets for the hub lock, it should be whistle clean behind them. And bro you NEED to get a manual, gear oil questions will get you flamed big time!! Buy a book and learn your truck! U joints take different grease than the wheel bearings and knuckles, the differentials take API GL5 SAE 80w90 HYPOId gear oil. My advice is get the cheap COASTAL brand from advanced auto. These trucks arent made for all that synthetic additive having super slippery gear oil. They like the old skool heavy stuff. BTW that coastal brand is cheap but dont forget for our trucks that oil blows away what was around in 84! I run cheap no additive coastal brand gear oil in my tranny, transfer case and both diff. Everything looks great and the truck loves it!

the third member can use rtv instead of a paper gasket, just clean it up really well first.

the knuckle seals around the back of the ball... trail gear, and others, have one-piece rubber rings that work better than anything that the factory used.

they are a bit tricky to install for the first time, but they rock.
