So i have a 1980 pickup, it has been sitting 20 years have cleaned gas tank, rebuilt the carb, fixed air conditoning twice and did a tune up got new tires and have enjoyed driveing this truck daily, but i seem to be messing with the carb too often, if i spray carb cleaner at the throttle shaft it idles up(still idles when you shut off the air/fuel by turning screw all the way in). I believe the bushings must be worn out, i really dont want to get a webber because my truck is all original and idles up when you turn on the a/c how will that work with a webber. Do i have any other options any help would be appreciated. I would post pictures if i could figure out how to do so from my phone

So i packed the throttle shaft with grease and it idled great so i believe the bushing is worn causeing the leak, is there any permant fix

Agreed, throttle shaft bushings are worn out, allowing unmetered air to be sucked in. That will lean the carb out; not good for the motor. Nice idea on the grease as a diagnostic tool! Well done.

Mine was doing this too ('78 20R). The only permanent solution to this is replacing the bushings. Unfortunately, even with a BUNCH of searching, I couldn't find any replacements for me to do it myself. After looking at it for a while, I'm not sure I wanted to try it myself anyway. Getting the butterfly screws was also impossible, plus not too sure about staking them in right.

I ended up getting a professionally rebuilt carb from National Carburetor. Just made more sense to me; if the bushings were that worn out, likely many of the other moving parts inside were too. You can either send them your carb to rebuild, or order one from them & send yours back for the core credit. Carb also comes with limited lifetime warranty.

Wow, that's a good price.

I had to replace my Weber for the same problem. I wish I had thought of the grease trick, but I eventually narrowed it down with carb cleaner. The Weber's rebuild kit didn't include new bushings or whatever is supposed to seal those shafts. The Bings on my BMW have O-rings.

So far the grease is working well for my 30 mile comute every day, im still torn about a rebuilt carb, the reason being the newest 20r carb is 36 years old and if you cant get a throttle shaft bushing the new carb will do the same thing sooner or later. I guess i will just save for a webber and all the adapters to make it look right i want to use the original air cleaner and with some researh found out its a vacume switch that raises the idle when a/c is on so until then i'll keep greasing my carb every fiew days haha

The rebuilt carbs from National are totally gone through, including new throttle shaft bushings. I double checked this with them before ordering. Sure they wear out sooner or later, as on all carbs, but they are new after all, not much to worry about there. Should be good for another 20 or 30 years.

I have not dealt with National and they may do great work but as far a your carb in general, I would say that is probably the biggest problem is where the pivot points have just wallowed out areas that air can slip by being unmetered. I like the Weber as it is simple. Check out kawazk636 for information on doing a Weber conversion if that is option for you.

I would like to put on a webber but, i have ice cold air conditoning how will a webber idle up when the a/c is on, the diaphram for this is on the stock carb, bot a vacum opperated linkage off the carb. That is my only concern hiw has a webber will idle with the ac on.

I never added AC to mine so not sure how it would effect it. I cant see it really causing a problem but not sure.

Even the 22re trucks idle up when the a/c is on there must be some reasonong behind it, with the strain of the compressor running i would think it would stall the little engne at a 750 rpm idle. Thats just my thought though. I need to do something soon it would be nice for my truck to idle not at 1200 rpm that would be really great.
