Question about engine date

Okay on my 82 I ordered main bearings from napa and they asked when was the truck manufactured because they had two different kinds one to 3/82 ont since 3/82 being the date on my door jam has 7/82 they order the since set. When I got the set the bottom bearings were right but the tops were totally different. They didn't have the grove or hole that the others had and the notch on them would not fit. How can I tell when my engine was built, I have searched all over the internet but still no answer.

I'd ask your local machine shop. They did the ordering for my engine, so I never ran into any issues. Just ask them what they'd order for your truck, maybe they'll help you out. With aftermarket stuff (actually even with Toyota stuff), it can be hard to get the right parts for these old trucks..

I'm taking the block to get rebuilt next week and I was just wondering so they don't order stuff for an 82 and it be a different block. IDK what happend with the bearings, I have ordered practically every other engine part and it has worked fine...

If the motor is original to the truck, you can check the manufacture date on the drivers side B pillar inside the door. I believe there should also be a casting code on the motor, but I can't remember where it is off the top of my head.
