Need help with my 80 pickup

I just purchased a 1980 toyota 4x4, and it's giving me some problems. I'm hoping someone here can help. Well the guy I bought it from took the engine apart and put it back together. I don't know how it was running before, but it's not drivable now. It will start, but you have to constantly give it gas for it to run, and it sounds terrible. The whole truck is shaking really bad is if it was misfiring, but all the plugs are fine. It instantly dies when you let off the gas. It also has a webber carb on it. Hoping to hear some ideas on what to check out on it. Thanks

9 times out of 10 , the distributor has been "stabbed" in on the wrong stroke . I would check the distributor timing/stroke first

I agree with Slacker, also check that the spark plug wires are correctly placed from the cap to the correct cylinders. I recently replaced a lot of stuff and had 1 wire in the wrong place, it had some of the symptoms you mention. Good luck.

yeah check your plug wires and timing. could also be something with the carb like a vacuum leak or something.
