Hello,

I have a '79 4WD that has a manual transmission but it is extremely loose when in gear, which is hard to find too due to being loose, it moves about 3-5 inches sideways when in gear. I took the plate around the stick off and can see the top of the transmission. I am seeing that the stick goes down to the right of the trany case and connects into this bushing looking thing that is bolted to the case and inside linking to the gear changer. I'm wondering what a newbie like me can do to right this, new connector? bushing?

Its called the shifter seat.

Marlin crawler makes them but yours is a 79 and his page says 81 and newer..

Try searching, too. There have been at least two threads on this exact same thing within the last month. The socket can be replaced at the very end of the shifter, but I guess on those early models, there isn't a shifter seat. I think that's what we learned, anyways...

Thanks everyone, that was a quick response. This is a great community and see my self spending many more hours learning here.

After a call to the bushing place I was informed that my '79 has a cast bushing with no hopes of replacing it beyond finding another one from a truck that is just in better condition. Soooo...... I've heard of people that have toyota only junk yards and maybe if I knew where one of these were I could get another.

Sadly, I want to get it to selling condition in order to get another toyota that has human comforts like A/C, power steering and quieter cab. I'm thinking of getting a '84-'88 to get these things and think that little extracab option should fit my rifles quite well, but dam that '79 body is good lookin.

Let me know what you think, I want to stay in the family.

You'd be lucky to find one in good shape used...
If you go over to the Marlin Crawler forum, there's a thread that stays a bit more current over there titled "practically anything you want" http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=39620.0 They may have your part. But also check this http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=55163.0 out, because people have a mod to fit your needs.

The first gens are awesome trucks, but yeah, if you want comfort, you may want to go 2nd or even 3rd gen. AC & power steering was an option on these 79-83 trucks and can be added. Cab can be quieted down with carpet. But, get the Toyota you want!

I replaced the shifter socket on my l43 with the marlin piece. Really didn't notice a difference at all in the sloppiness of the shifter, still pops out of reverse too.

Your best bet is to try and adjust the actual linkage under the shifter (if you have the side mount shifter). Thats what i'm going to do, it seems the linkage is what has all the play.
