82 Toyota 4x4 w/Tranny issues - what's the best solution?

Hey all, got an 82 4x4, i've had it for about 6 years, had to replace the tranny at about 99,000 miles due to wierd squeaking/grinding sounds starting in 5th gear, then 3rd, then every gear but 4th...of course I just replaced the stereo and drove it to Mexico, and only replaced the tranny when it got so bad I figured it was gonna just blow up soon....anyways finally got it replaced with a rebuilt transmission and was good to go....

so 12,000 miles later, i've got the same squeeking/grinding sounds, (guess it's a bearing issue?) and want to fix em this time for good!

My question is , what's the best solution for this issue? A transmission from a different model year? Rebuild the one i've got with different gearing? (tires are 31x10.5)

thanks in advance for any help!!!

your better off finding a newer tranny and using an adaptor from marlin crawler...

dont rebuild your current one because it could just keep on breaking, changing your gears in the tranny isnt needed..change the ones in the rear end

a shop did it - don't know anything about the source/quality of the rebuilt they put in.

the '79-83 trannies weren't known especially for their strength. '83 had the L52 which is the strongest.

marlin crawler can rebuild your tranny with bigger bearings and a gearset from a later model G54 transmission which is much stronger. you could also put in a later model transmission but they're about 4" longer and you'd have to relocate the crossmember, shifter holes, and resize the drivelines.

I replaced the L50 in my 1981 model with the L52 from Marlin Crawler...it's worked very well for me.....got about 6,000 miles on it. Check their website, they modify the L52 to compensate for some of the tranny's issues.
