19'83 4x4 pickup shakes between 45 and 55mph

I have a 1983 4x4 pickup with only 110k on it and it has recently begun shaking very hard between 45 and 55mph regardless of what gear I am in. Nearly everything on it is original except for the transmission which I replaced in 2001. I know very little about this stuff, and am just learning so if more information is needed to help me diagnose this problem, let me know.
Any ideas as to why?
Thanks in advance

I had a tire out of balance on my 4runner that would shake the front end and steering wheel when I hit 45mph, I drove like that for a while and then got new tires and it quit so I'm assuming that's what it was. Does it shake in neutral when coasting at that speed? And can you feel it in your steering wheel or anywhere specific?

Check the u joints on either side of the driveline, shouldn't have any play in it if you try to move it by hand.

Do you have the steering stabilizer shock in place and if it is, how long has it been there?

Your out of balance dude. Did you hit a curb or go off roading? That will do it, hard hits to the tires. spend the 50 bux or so and get the balancing, good till your next off road trip!

Start with the simple: out of balance tire
Then move on to mechanical issues.
Find a mechanic you trust to look at it.

I did do some off-roading a few months back, so maybe it is just out of balance. I'll start there. Thanks!

I love your truck. I saw that exact same model (colour and decals) on ebay and it looked brand new like it had just come off the lot in the early 80s. Sold for very cheap too but it was way down in the states so too far for me Yours looks very clean though.

like others have said, its probably an out of balance tire. those usually show at 40-45mph. it could also be a bad/blown shock. if that's still not it, check your u-joints for play.

let us know what you find.

I am running 33" tires and have the same problem. Put on new 10" wide rims, and the tire shop said that they should wait for the tire to "set" to the rim before balancing them, so have been running them for months and they shake the whole truck like crazy starting around 40mph up to 55. Balancing is in the future. I hope this fixes the probelm because I don't know what else it could be. Thing is, they have only been really bad since winter started. Warmer weather was no problem. I think the lower tire pressure and lack of balance are causing the shimmy.

Mine too. As soon as the weather turned cold, this started but I didn't really put it together until you mentioned that with yours.

check alignment too. Mine did that really bad, almost to apoint that it was not driveable. If i hit a bump it would knock it into shaking really bad. Ajusted the alignment and it drives like new.

check wheel bearings, usually happens (shaking) at a lower speed but could well be the problem
