Just using a regular old ARC?

Plan on building some sliders and bumpers for my 86 EXT cab. Maybe a few other things. Will an arc welder suffice for this? I dont ahve a MIG setup at home.

yes

MIG is just more convenient and easier to get into hard places and angles with.

Arc welding is fine

I started with a plain old arc (stick) welder, 220 volt, 140/230 amp. They work fine, and with AC and DC options and a good selection of different electrodes, you can weld most anything with one. I made quite a few sets of sliders with mine before switching to MIG (mainly for the speed):

A stick welder is also a lot less expensive to operate than MIG. I figure MIG runs about $20/hr. to run with the gas and wire.
