AFE Cold Air Intake

Has anyone heard of AFE Cold Air Intake

Well, i was looking for Cold air intake for my truck, AFE claims with their Stage 2 kit, adds up to 16 1/2 Horsepower, and increased torque... now, thats alot of horsepower, even K&N doesnt add that much.......

It sounds great to me, but i know their will be some kind of problems with it, thats alot of air into the engine... would i run into some ECU problems or something?
Heres a link to their main page: http://www.afefilters.com/technology.htm

I think most people on here would recommend an Amsoil air filter, decplate and ISR mod.......least i think you can do that to your truck. Cold air doesnt really do as much as they claim.

Right.

Bamboo; search around the forum and don't miss the Tech Writeup section. There's a lot of information here about getting more air into your truck, and the claims of these "cold air intake" folks.

Here, read Gadget's site...

K&N did a dyno test on a 2nd gen 3.0 between stock and their FIPK showing only a 3 HP gain, and it was high up in the RPMs. I wonder if that is even outside the consistency of a dyno...

I think most everyone agrees that the K&N flows better than stock, and that a big piece of mandrel bent tubing will flow better than the stock, but IMHO, the dyno results just show that the stock intake isn't the source of our problem...I'll change to a high flow/long life element, but will save my time and money on intake mods.

Looks like it's a different story on the 3.4 though. K&N shows dyno increase of 9.5 HP - that might be worth trying something (deckplate and filter probably gets you close to that though)

The numbers mean NOTHING unless you know how the test was run, what the climate was, elevation, BHP or crank HP, fuel, plugs, etc.

9hp at the crank is 5% on a stock 3.4L. The margin of "feeling it" is generally about 10hp - some say a bit less. The margin of error for multiple runs on _the same_ dyno _the same_ day is about 3hp. When you start comparing different products from different vendors (so, different dynos, different gas, different EVERYTHING), _and_ you start believing their own quoted numbers, I'd put the margin of error at around 7hp - at least.

As well, I'll bet that those numbers are quoted as "up to 300 additional HP!!! when running downhill, with a tailwind".

Again, the point is... you will NOT _gain hp_ with any intake tube; that is NOT the bottleneck in the intake system. The bottleneck is the airbox (and the MAF, but that's a different thread), do the deckplate or the elbow mod, drop in an Amsoil filter and thank us for saving you money.

Cleaning up the intake air path (i.e., replacing the tube or doing the ISR mod) will get you better throttle response.

Like I wrote back on the 4th, there is a very fine tech write-up section here at Yotatech... There's even a SEARCH feature!

Tech writeups...
http://www.yotatech.com/~corey/tech/techpage.htm

Search...
http://www.yotatech.com/search.php

Using either to look for "Deckplate" or "Elbow mod" will get you plenty of info. Using Search for "Amsoil air filter" or something close will get you info on that. Don't forget the "ISR Mod" that we're talking about... That's in the tech section as well.

And... did you read the link I posted to "Gadgets" site?
