I just had my 2000 4runner SR5 3.4 Auto Transmission rebuilt for $2,100. I brought it to a local mechanic who has done some work for me before, however they send it out to a local Transmission shop that they use.

I was wondering if anyone can explain just what a transmission rebuild entails? What is replaced, and what is 'rebuilt'? For example, are shift solenoids replaced, whether they are good or not, etc...?

Thanks! Any input would be appreciated....

I have been doing painting and pressure washing as a side gig for a little while now. My 4Runner has been the workhorse, the back is always littered with paint buckets, pressure washers, and the random helping hand. I was wondering if anyone uses their 3rd Gen. as a work rig and if there are any ladder racks that are for available for our kind?

Oh hell, throw in a good story if ya got one too.

Last night I began noticing a "swishing" noise in 3rd and 4th gears. It goes away in neutral. When I wiggle the shift lever, particularly in 4th gear, I can hear the volume of ths noise change with the wiggles. Started out barely audible and now I can hear it over the radio.

I'm assuming this is likely internal bearings wearing out. Would you folks recommend, say, a Lucas product, to mix in with the oil? Which, by the way, I changed about 3 years ago. Vehicle has 270K miles on it.

Thanks for any help!!

Will the long block off of the 2002 work in the 96? I have read that the later engines were drive by wire but cant I just swap the 96 thottle body to the 02 longblock. Also are there any other differences i should look out for. Any information would be great. Thanks

I have a 95 1/2 tacoma w/ 289,000 miles (2.7L), the other day on the way to work the truck started back firing and choking off finally it cut off and barley turned over when I tried to restart it. I put in a new battery ab 100 miles ago and I had the battery tested it passed. The altenator is also new it is an aftermarket unit from the local parts store. Are there any known wiring issues with early tacomas? There is no check engine light on, I'm trying to fix it as cheap as possible and have access to scan tools and any other tools I may need. Has anyone else had these issues? Any help is appreciated!

A few weeks ago, the check engine, VSC OFF and TRAC warning lights came on. In 8-1/2 years and 184,000 miles, I've never had a CE light come on. So I swung by Advance Auto, borrowed their reader and found that P0446 was the culprit. I cleared the code and all was well until a few days ago - when all three lights came on again.

was out of town and just ignored them until today, when on the 8-hour drive home, the truck just reeked of gasoline fumes. I'm aware that the code is related to evaporative emissions stuff, but that's it. Has anyone dealt with the same issue and successfully replaced solenoids, charcoal canisters, etc?

I can't get the smell out of my nose.....

I've been doing a lot of searching and can't find anything concrete.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading somewhere that the elocker factory option implied that the gearing ratio would therefore be lower. Is this true? If so... what is it?

I recently rolled my last 4runner that didn't have this option and am looking at buying a new one (2000 limited AT) with the locker option and want to upgrade from my old 31's to 33's, and adjust the gearing close to the recommended (31" - 33" tires) 4.88 ratio. I'll probably stick with getting the BFG AT's - I do a lot of driving in the snow and these have been great.

My 97 4cyl 5sp is acting up. It started when I got the truck a few months ago, but the problem has been increasing. Every once in a while, while driving down the road the engine would cut out and back in making the entire car jerk. I happen to think it's something electrical, like a short or condensation in the distributor cap.

I'm fairly certain there is a problem with the electrical system but I need some help possibly diagnosing before I spend money. Back when visiting an offroad park the truck broke down because water got into the coils and was interrupting the spark. We let it dry after spraying brake cleaner in it and it ran fine. Then while washing off the engine (while it was running) a few weeks ago, I put my hand on the coil wires and got a really nasty shock.

Has anyone experienced this before? It's happening a lot more frequent, it's uncomfortable to passengers, and it's starting to worry me about reliability.
