Hey guys.

I just bought my first Yota three weeks ago. I found a 1990 2nd Gen 4Runner 2 door on Craigslist with a blown head gasket for $1100.00, and towed it to my buddy Mike's the next day.

She is filthy, but a good starting point. Minimal rust and repairable body damage.

We tore the head off, and started soaking the bores with ATF to clean the schmeg off of them. This truck hasn't been licensed since 2005, and there was alot of water sitting in the #4 bore.

Then I removed the super high tech purple tint. I hate the smell of that stuff when you peel it off of the glass.

I promptly had the head resurfaced and cleaned.

Bores, pistons and deck all cleaned up, new head gasket on

Head is assembled and ready to install

To start this is my first post on yotatech! I have been on the site for the past few weeks now since my fiance and I just purchased our first 4Runner. There is a wealth of information here and I have learned a lot already. Any who enough babbling.

The Rig:
1989 4Runner SR5
4x4
3.0l-V6
R150F 5-Speed
4.10-Gears
215k miles
Auto-Hubs (Boo!)

I got this from one of my professors at school. The Runner has been kept in pretty decent shape and has had most of the regular maintenance taken care of: Clutch, Timing Belt, Alt, A/C, Battery, Shocks, Brakes, Exhaust, and the list goes on and on. Drives great and gets about 18 mpg city and 21 hwy.

Only Big thing we had to do when we got it was to put on some new tires. We decided to go with some General Grabber AT2s in 225/75R15 for now. They look good, had some pretty good reviews, and most importantly fit our budget. So far they have proven to be a great tire.

Future Plans:
Zuk Coil Mod
Aisin Manual Locking Hubs
New Paint Job
CB or Ham Radio
Winch
31's
4.30 or 4.556 - Gears
Lockers or LSD (Still haven't decided which way I want to go here. This Runner will mainly be our DD and will see some mild-medium trail use.)

The Pics:

Engine Bay Shot

I will post pics of the future mods as I get em' done. Being a college student nearing graduation and getting married this summer will slow things down a bit for this Runner.

Over Thanksgiving I will be doing the Zuk Coil Mod and converting to Aisin Manual Locking Hubs. The Paint Job will have to wait till May or June. Anything else will happen when it happens.

My new mall crawler complete with ugly centercaps, hillbilly wheels/lift/bumpers/ugly ass fender flaps/faded paint.

Image:...

My new mall crawler complete with ugly centercaps, hillbilly wheels/lift/bumpers/ugly ass fender flaps/faded paint.

Step one; window tint, buff and wax, space out rear wheels, remove center caps, add storage box;

This was an improvement in looks but I still couldn't live with it so I removed the flaps and obnoxiously over sized wheels (that rubbed ) and replaced them with some nice clean stockers on factory sized tires. I also removed the Hella "look how cool I am" lights that weren't even hooked up. It drives and looks a lot better now but there is still more room for improvement!

Future mods;

Remove ugly ass, useless bumpers in exchange for stock and see about lowering suspension back to factory specs.

mod note: Paint does'nt look faded to me...

Building a relatively self sufficient, expedition type rig, I know "expedition" gets tossed around a lot as a truck descriptor when in fact its a rig with just a mild lift and 33's essentially just an on / off road DD. While my build may not be as extreme as some it's being set up as something we can live in during the length of a trip up the intercontinental highway in a few years, but first will cut its teeth in the Puerto Rico mountains and jungles. Plan to start with is just the basics:

Hot water shower w/ water tank
Dual Batteries
New in floor sub mount and hidden amp
Bed organizer / sleeping platform
In bed spare tire mount
Tinted lexan windows in canopy w/ security screen inside
Tinted & Security laminated cab windows
LED lighting in & outside canopy with in canopy switch panels, all on a quick release so I take off the canopy when around town if I want.
Tune up w/new fluids everywhere and new timing belt

And here's the first bit to start!

New intake to fit 2nd battery:

Some Goodies :D

New front axle brake lines, rear pinion seal, shifter bushing and cup, Painless dual battery kit, and 4 12" white LED strips to illuminate the inside of the canopy.

New flush sub mount:

Will put up a shot of my old box soon.

Now I just need to decide on my batteries, I've got a $52 credit for a Sears battery because my old one was still under warranty. I've done a bunch of research but I still can't figure it out, why couldn't you run one deep cycle for the accessories and one regular for the standard truck needs if they're on an isolator?

I bought a 94 Toyota pickup from my cousin that overheated it on the freeway. I had the truck towed to Beaver Toyota and had one of my techs check it out. It looked like it had a blown headgasket. My cousin did not want to fix the truck as he has a baby on the way and needs a bigger vehicle. I ended up buying the truck and having one of my techs tear it apart. We found the headgasket was blown but one of the cylinder walls was scored pretty bad. We Sent the motor out had it cleaned up and honed installed new pistons and rings. We started to assemble the motor tonight. Here are some of the pics. Ill get more pics up of the truck and other things as we go. The truck is getting all new seals and gaskets, fuel filter, clutch with all bearings, Ive already installed frt brakes. The truck had some lil 225 tires i bought some used 235 mud tires with great tread for 200 bucks.
I went to the store and bought some paint for the block, at first i was thinking the traditional black but opted for some Bright Neon Green paint. The monster trucks are comming to town and i guess i was pumped to see Grave digger so i decided on the paint. I think it looks pretty cool.

So I picked this thing up in Dec 08. Got it cheap because the guy had to get rid of some toys and since it didn't run, he thought it best to let it go. Brought it home, tossed in a battery and sprayed some ether and it fired right up. It took a bit more than that to make it road worthy, lol, but that was the start of it.

Previous thread with some "build" related stuff in it...

Part one of the problem fixin

Mostly been doing just general maintenance to it thus far, but I'm getting ready to do some more serious stuff in the near future. Like, as in now, lol.

Just got home with a new truck. 88 22RE/W56 truck. It's trashed but it's heart will live on. This should also fix the driveability issue I have not been able to track down.

I got about an hours worth of work in on the trucks tonight, started getting the wire harness out of the way for the swap. There's going to be some time spent on cleaning it up, lol. Not sure if it was routed bad from the factory or if someone else beat me to it, but I'm going to extend some of it and reroute some things away from the engine. Probably replace most of the sheathing as well. If there's one thing I'm anal about it's wire harnesses, lol. Drives me bonkers when they're messy.

(Gotta have a list of things done/to do and parts needed, lol)

Anyway, that's that for now, I'll update as I go.

So, I picked up a runner just to drive eveyday. We know how long that lasts. I heald out for about three weeks. After rebuilding the 3.slow, and fixing all the wiring that was fired.

I still had a spare solid axle laying around, so I call my good friend a Trail-gear
Ineed I need Ineed. Wheel just the basic hanger, springs and steering showed up. My buddy came over and we had a plasma party.

We here the stock photo's the day we picked up to add to the herd.

i bought my truck a couple years ago and if done a few mods so im going to write up a build thread of every thing iv done to it since i bought it.

89 toyota pickup SR5 V6 4X4 extended cab-$5600
169,000 highway miles. i even have the original craigslist ad.

first thing i did before any thing was remove the factory mud flaps. i pretty much hated them. and de-smoked the cab, the previous owner was a chain smoker, now you cant even tell someone smoked in it

i dont have many pictures of it before the lift because i didnt have a camera but here's what i got. black spray painted wheels, dual whips, removed the pin striping, magnaflow exhaust system, expanded metal grill, and took it wheeling for the first time :)

the next step was a 4" super lift which i payed way too much for. removed the chrome trim, slapped on a light bar and 2 kc daylighters.

next step was the brand new 33X12.50R15 super swamper tsl radials on 15X10 pro comp extreme rock crawler simulation beadlocks. i was way too pumped. along with my marlin crawler rear bumper. this was back when i didnt even know what marlin crawler and trail gear were.

http://s264.photobucket.com/albums/i...t=DSCN0300.flv

then i moved to north idaho! first snow of 2008.

i hate canopy's, this is the only picture of one on my truck, only reason its on is for moving.

the parents bought me a set of 33" cooper st's studded as a moving away present, they did pretty good.

got my new trail-gear rock defense bumper, couldnt wait to get it painted so i threw it on. later got it line-x'd and mounted my kc titanium slim lights. i also did the corner light blinker mod.

got ball joint spacers, sway away 23 mm torsion bars and shackles, then stuffed 38's for the hell of it. they rubbed the piss out of the fenders!

but i ran that for a few months then welded the front diff for a run. later took it to the moyie mud boggs!!!!

and then...

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...deoid=57197343

caused this:

took 7 teeth of the ring gear and chipped 2 on the pinion. so i stripped the entire 4x4 from the axles to the diff and drive line and ran prerunner for a while. SAS HERE I COME!!!

its like xmas:

and so we begin...

while waiting to finish my axle i slapped on some sliders:

and then the torching begins:

put some trail gear "better than stocks" in, well in my opinion thats bull cause i broke one the next run.

put in some black projection headlights and painted the grill and light trim black:

moving on to better things, i am currently running 38" tsl bias's, welded front, aussie locked rear, 5.29's, dual t-cases with 2.28 and 4.7 23 spline gears with a budbuilt flat skid.
