Hey everyone, just started the swap today.

Picked up a 1995 4runner with 100k on it for $1000.

Today we took off the tranny bolts, starter, flywheel bolts, and most of the hoses and wiring harness.

I need some help and stuff guys!
1) Where can I find a 3.4!? I've looked everywhere. No one here replies to me when I make an offer!

2) I'm keeping the stock tranny, so what will be different about this swap (auto)? What do I need to do differently?

3) I'm not sure I get the whole ECU thing... I need a 3.4 ECU with the engine harness? Will the ECU have to be automatic since I am keeping the auto tranny?

More questions will come soon, and pics of the motor comming out tomorrow will be up tomorrow night!:safari:

swapping harnesses on motor

Still looking for donor engines. A couple I have come across either have an auto harness or none for my manual chassis.

I think I read that upper intake/plenum has to come off. Is this a big deal?
So I'm wondering what's involved in swapping or placing a harness on a 97 motor? Is it a big job?

The conversion is involved enough, but if I must do this to secure a good low mileage motor, then ok. Or is it asking for trouble?

Thanks,

Have been doing lots of searching, trying to find out what is needed for the swap.... A few specs

98'ish 5vz - r151F crawlbox 2.28 - dana 300/atlas II (still deciding on t-case)

Haven't started pulling the old motor yet, however I almost have all the parts...

First thing I need to find out is how how many pulse vss for a manual 5vz? I will have to go with an aftermarket setup as I need the VSS and cable for the speedo since I want to keep the factory FJ40 gauge cluster.

Another question I have is are 5.29's appropriate for 37's, according to the gear calculator 4.88's are spot on for factory. I figure that brick like aerodynamics of a FJ40 probably needs the additional 8.5% gearing of 5.29's...

2582 RPMs @ 70 (Stock) 31" tires
2583 RPMs @ 70 (4.88) 36.875" tires
2801 RPMs @ 70 (5.29) 36.875" tires

219 RPMS Different from Stock 8.5% deeper

Any input is greatly appreciated...

I want to make as good of a thread as my crappy iPhone camera will allow to help people with the experiences I will have along the way as I was helped by everyone else that has done the same. I am on a SERIOUS budget here so maybe that can help others as well from a poor mans point of view.
Got at the donor runner today to start the 3.4 swap. Got some good news and some bad as I ripped into the Runner. As expected from what I have read, as I started to peel away the crushed fender, I could peek in and see the plug for the 3.0 dipstick. Thats great news that I dont have to drill. I wasnt all the worried but one less thing to go wrong is good.

Day started like this

And then the sawzall was introduced to Toyota and then this:

I did have some questions that I have had for some time (assuming I would figure them out as I started seeing things first hand rather than read about them ).
1. The idle up for the power steering. I have tried searching on this over the past few months but get nothing other than guys having idle probs. Not sure of how this works. I assume something kicks the idle up slightly in non-moving wheels turning. I dont understand what is needed to make it keep working as the Runner had it. I also dont understand the need for a special hose as of yet. I removed the hoses from the steering box all the way to the pump. Anyone enlighten me, or maybe as I start actually putting things on the 92 using the 92 box, I'll what the prob is. I plan to junk the ABS actuator so isnt a simple pressure to pressure, return to reservoir going to work?

2. There was a vacuum tank under the driver fender that went to some VSV's and then to a blue check valve (I think) and then down the diff. I assume that is for the ADD. My truck I changed to manual hubs so am I correct to assume that I will not need any of this for smog and anything else?

3. To make the AC work. What am I going to need from the Runner. The condenser, dryer, etc. were ruined in the crash but of course all the lines in the motor compartment seem OK and the compressor is good. I thought that I am using the 3.4 compressor and just change the plate where the lines connect and then use r12 as normal, even though this compressor was 134.

4. What, if any, wiring from under the hood should I plan on needing and keeping. I dont want to start hacking anything up but I would like to get stuff out of the way. From reading about every post here and various other threads I cant remember anyone ever mentioning anything about reusing any 3.4 wiring other than the motor harness.
5. This is a 97 Runner SR5. I assumed that would be OBD2 but I guess not. Wouldn't there be a diagnostic plug in the cab? I only see one on the plenum. By the way, just to the right is the check valve?? I was talking about. I dont need this correct. just cap it?

6. Also, did anyone change their fuel pump to the 3.4. I thought that i read that somewhere but I know in 00-02 or something they changed injectors. this is all foggy now. Am I changing pump or keeping the stock 92 pump?

Got some bad news though looks like the EVAP box didn't survive the crash. I have no idea what the function off this thing is but I assume Toyota had it sealed for a reason and I am thinking that this isnt going to work.

Really stinks cause replacing that just isnt in the budget.

Also, I saw now hook point on the passenger side. I see the hook on the driver side, assuming that is the one at rear of motor and comes up along the trans kickdown cable, but nothing on pass side. Kinda strange i guess....my 3.0 has a pass side but no driver side one :think:. Kinda lucky i guess. We'll see if I can make a working pair that will work for both motors.

Not a ton done today but was kinda surreal to actually see all the stuff that I have only been seeing pictures and reading about for the past 6 months or so. Picking up engine stand, motor crane, and a parts washer tomorrow from my uncle so hopefully have all this out Tuesday night(11-17-09).

After searching Craigslist, about 10 forums, etc. everyday since July i think, i finally found a donor that I could afford and felt right. Picked up a 97 runner today in great shape! The front has been hit and pushed the radiator into the fan and crushed the driver fender, radiator support, etc. Made the 400 mile trip today to grab it.

Not a great picture. I just copied it off the guys ad.

The mounting tabs on the EVAP box are broken but not that big of a worry. I can figure out something else. NOthing hit the alternator, pulley so thats all good.

Its an auto though, so i am going to have those issues of getting it into a 92 excab 5 speed.

Anyway, I am stoked and firing up the sawzall in the morning and starting cutting smashed body parts out of the way.

I'll take what I need and then part out the rest to recoup some money that i paid for the runner.

Here we go.......

just wired in the obd2 to see what the code is, but flashes the symbols for both 02s, cat, evap. It says when it flashes the symbols are solid it means testing is done, when its flashing it means the vehicle supports that monitor but the vehicle has not yet run that diagnostic test.

so it comes up no codes, but cant test the important stuff. everything should be hooked up correctly as it runs decent, been driving it for a few weeks.

the only issue I see is that when I hooked up the grounds for the obd2, the B-W wire for the common ground I just stuck with another B-W ground for the transfer case. I tried the grounding in many different configs to see if it changed anything. straight to body, all to the browns, all to the B-W's and then how they should be...but no change.

any ideas???

Fresh 3..4 swap, and yes i swapped in my 3.0 sender.

what I don't like is the low nature of the gauge. It sits just a HAIR above the low line when driving above 30. under 30ish its in the middle of the low section.

yes I am going to put a better aux oil pressure gauge on there, but dont know if this is even abnormal for a swapped 3.4.

you will probably ask and also yell at me for running 20-40w with a little lucas, it just always seemed to hold up better on the 3.0. and i figured if you can dump a whole bottle of lucas in 15-30, whats the big deal.

If you have had similar gauge readings and overcome the problem, or had no problems at all, i sure would like to hear about it.

heres some pictures from today just to wet your mouth...took it out for some flex to find where to cut my firewall. shes a fresh SAS & 3.4 swap on 35's with dual arbs and batteries... I cant stop looking at it in my driveway.

I have the parts for the 3.4 but i didn't realize that the flywheels differed between auto and manual.

Well im pretty far along on the swap im just getting to the wiring portion of the fun. My donor was a auto 02 so i have plenty of wires to remove most of them are in the engine wiring harness. so yay to that as Ive been laying things out ive noticed my donor had 4 sensors/valves. I have a v4 vsv evap and a v11 vsv canister closed valve that's wired on the engine harness and then I have a v8 vapor pressure sensor and v12 vsv pressure swtiching valve that go from then engine harness into ik6 and then to bn7. to their loaction on the canister which was mounted near the tank. i went my local toyota yard n got a canister but i beleive. a sensor is missing. i did mange to get v12 but i am missing v4 v11 and v8. v8 is a three wire connection while v4 v11 v12 are all 2 wire conections. I'll be able to get the plug ends when I pull the auto stuff out but it looks on most swaps. only 3 vsv's are being used. even the ors has 3 along with evoltas swap n breknraj with 2002 to motor used 3 what am i missing here Does the canister from a 2000 or earlier have all three vsv's on it. I saw some used the original vsv for evap. I guess I could just wire it in and if i dont need it just cap it. Thoughts??

Got everything working, except the tach. From the diagram, it looks as if the whole cluster shares a single power and a single ground...at least for the gauges. My volt meter works, so I figure it's safe to assume that the power and ground are there.

The tach has no function. It doesn't move. The system looks fairly straight forward....the new harness has a wire that goes from the igniter to the tach through IK2. The old setup runs a wire from the ignitor into the driver's side of the firewall going to the tach, then something else, then the A/C amplifier.

I grabbed the black wire from the new harness (verified continuity with terminal 8 on the igniter) and spliced into the existing black wire on the A/C amplifier (verified continuity between this wire and the black going to the tach) ...and still, the tach doesn't work.

What am I missing?
