Hey guys thought I would post this here as I'm sure someone would know. I just got a new 3VZE in my 89 Pickup, and it's running beautifully, 120 miles on it so far. I'm not sure if my mechanic did the jumper thing when he set the idle or not, but here's the issue. The truck sits around 900-1000rpm at start up, however once I've driven it for 10-15 minutes, then it either hangs or wants to idle at 1900rpm. Hoping it's not a big vacuum leak on the manifold gasket. Another piece of information, sometimes, when sitting at a stop light, it's sitting at 900 ish rpm, if it rev it, then it sticks high at 1900rpm. Could this be TPS? The idle speed adjustment is all the way in if that tells you anything. I'm hoping maybe I can just go through per the manual and reset the idle with jumpers putting it in "idle setting mode". Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I’m looking to replace the 22re that’s in my 4Runner with a ‘82-83 22r. I’m replacing since my 22re spun a rod bearing and I need to start over, and there’s a good deal on an early 22r. I’ve read that I will need a new distributor, lower fuel pressure, and possibly a different exhaust manifold. Will my wiring plug into this setup or will I need a new harness? What else do I need to do this swap?

thank you

My 89 just got a new 3VZE! I'm pretty excited about it, the last engine had a dead piston so it was necessary. I'm wondering if you guys have any advice on things to look out for in the beginning or any other upgrades I should be doing. I've put 100 miles on it so far still in the break in period with the heavier oil. I love this truck so much and looking forward to many years with it. Thought I would share!

Hello everyone, I just got a 86 Toyota pickup with a 22re, it had sat for about 8 years before I fixed the gas tank then it fired up for about 3 minutes, after that I’d go to start it then it would run for about 1-4 seconds then shut off. I jumped the Fp and b+ diagnostic port to get it continuously running, along with a new fuel filter. Same problem. Pulled the intake manifold and fuel rail to clean the injectors. Pretty sure I did a good job. I have power to all my injectors as well. AFM opens as it should, not to sure where to go from here and it does run on starting fluid. Thanks guys!

My pickup has recently developed a habit of clicking without starting. I am trying to be methodical with it.
For example, today I checked the battery before starting: 12.8 volts, but the relays clicked and the engine wouldn't crank.
After I attached the battery charger for 5 minutes, it started right up although it cranks longer (due to, I think, flooding from the fuel pump relay).
I drove to town and made several stops without a problem
I replaced the ignition relay recently and haven't had a problem until after I reconnected the dash-mounted temp gauge after removing the lower dash and fiddling with the brake booster mounting nuts.
There might be a slight battery drain, but the engine should start with 12.8 volts.
Do any of you know what the problem might be?

Hello All,

I am at my wits end and thought I would turn to the professionals. I am putting A/C in my 1995 toyota 2.4l DLX 2wd pickup. I sourced the difficult to get HVAC box off of Ebay. The seller assured me it came out of a 1995 toyota pickup 22re. I replaced the evaporator core with and expansion valve. The box fit like a glove under the dash. However when I went to connect the suction hose the fitting was too small. Fast forward past three different A/C suction hoses none of which fit I decided to try a 3.0L hose just to see if it would work. The fitting was a perfect for the evaporator core but the hose wasn't long enough and the fitting for the compressor fit but the bend in the metal part rubs the compressor pulley. At this point I am at a loss. The best I can come up with is this diagram:

Does anyone know where to find the suction amd discharge lines? Or can you explain why lines for a 2.4l that I can get off of partsgeek won't fit my evaporator core or compressor?

Did Toyota use a 3.0l evaporator core in 2.4l trucks and make a hose that was specific to that design?

Any help or atleast explanation will be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys, here goes nothing. I have a 91 4runner, 2wd auto with a 3vze in southern California.

This is a sentimental truck so talk about selling and buying another isn't really helpful.

I had planned a 5vze or a 1uzfe swap for a long time as an auto, but haven't had the chance to start. Now, many years later, I'm finally getting closer to be able to start something. With the advances in EVs and integration, I'm eyeing a 2013ish Nissan leaf to swap in and convert this thing to an EV instead of messing with a crossover pipe on the 5vze or possible headache of the 1uz. Neither of those is a deal breaker, but still means a pretty inefficient motor in an old truck compared to an EV. Added benefit that we have solar so this could be a daily commute for free.

That said, an ev conversion makes no sense with an automatic, so there are a lot of ideas on the table, and I'm looking for advice.

I can't seem to locate a 2wd R150 to make this straightforward (any leads appreciated). The potential for future 4x4 makes doing some work to put an R150f in there possibly worthwhile. I'm researching the extent of work needed for this now. The real advantage of something that bolts to the 3vze is being able to install and test the system before swapping to EV, but that is I guess not strictly required. Transmissions from 90s 4 cylinders are cheap and available but then I can't test with the 3vze and I hear they aren't as sturdy, so probably not a good thing for EV torque.

I also don't really want to acquire a whole donor car since I have a small garage and not a ton of space to keep a whole nother vehicle around.

Looking for advice from the community on a simple path to a more usable 4runner going forward. Thoughts?

Edit: Doing some more digging, it looks like maybe I can use a 91-95 Tacoma R150 if I snag the crossmember...can anyone confirm that?
I had a new clutch installed 165,000 mile ago (18 years). so when the time comes, would like to replace it with the same make and model. Lost my receipt and the shop is now under new ownership and don't have any records. Just curious. Worst comes, I can see how it's built and find one similar now.

So, I recently did a clutch replacement on my "owned since new" '91 4Runner 3VZE V6, putting in a vehicle correct Aisin CKT-016 clutch and a new LUK flywheel. This was only the second time in 35 years that I have done this job and it all seemed to go well. Unfortunately once the truck was back on the ground and we started driving it, we noticed that when starting out in first gear, the clutch will sometimes shudder while engaging. The severity of the shudder is not dangerously intense but it varies with load (worse with a loaded truck or on a hill) and it is not consistent. Under the same conditions it will sometimes engage smoothly and other times you get the shakes.

I am looking for any information I can find on what to look for when we pull the transmission of to check this out (or possible solutions that might avoid a transmission drop). I have my list of possibilities but I thought it would be worthwhile to put this out to the community to see if there were any ideas I hadn't thought of.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Cheers!

Jim
